METRO ROUNDUP: Martinsville, Ill., golfer aces par-4 hole at Casey Country Club

CASEY, ILL. — What are the odds of acing a par-4 golf hole?

Sources on the extremely rare event vary from the commonly quoted 6,000,000-to-1 odds to Golf World Magazine’s more conservative estimate of 1,000,000-to-1.

No matter the number, Chris Lee of Martinsville, Ill. managed to beat those odds.

Lee holed the par-4, 290-yard No. 4 hole at Casey Country Club on Aug. 9. Lee played the round with his father, Jeff, and David Doran, who were witnesses.

Lee had broken his regular driver during his round and was using a replacement when he struck the extraordinarily rare ace.

Lee is a senior on Casey/Martinsville’s boys golf team.



In other golf news:

• Robinson gets first ace — At Geneva Hills, Tom Robinson got his first hole-in-one Wednesday on the No. 12 hole.

He used an 8-iron for the 120-yard shot. Witnesses were Hobie Gilman, Dave Brown and Charlie Palmateer.

• Another ace posted — At Rea Park, 77-year-old Jim Horrall of Terre Haute used a 5-wood to score a hole-in-one on the 175-yard 17th hole Tuesday.

Witnessing the feat were Don Campbell, Rick Wilcoxon and Darrell Guerin. Horrall shot a 68 for the day, said Rea Park pro Dave Kennedy.

• Father/Son tourney — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, Dick and Steve Vining and Paul and Greg Stanley were winners in the 2012 Father/Son Tournament last week.

Format was Pinehurst Alternate Shot.

Volleyball

• ISU picked 8th in MVC — The Indiana State Sycamores were picked to finish eighth in the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference volleyball race according to a pre-season poll of MVC coaches released today. ISU earned the most preseason points it has in over 10 years.

Defending champion Northern Iowa is the unanimous favorite to win the 2012 title as the Panthers garnered all 10 first place votes.

ISU was picked ninth in the 2011 pre-season coaches’ poll but used a strong finish to the regular season to take the sixth and final tournament berth away from Drake and Bradley.

• ISU alumni game on Saturday — The ISU volleyball season will unofficially begin this Saturday when the Sycamores take on a team of Indiana State Alumni in the annual scrimmage at 2 p.m. in the ISU Arena.

A Meet and Greet for the 2012 team and returning alumni will be held immediately after the scrimmage at the Ballyhoo.

Soccer

• ISU tabbed for 6th — In a preseason vote conducted by the seven head coaches from the Missouri Valley Conference this week, the Indiana State women’s team was picked to finish sixth in 2012.

Reigning champion Illinois State earned the top spot in the preseason vote, picking up five first-place votes and 47 total points. Missouri State came in second, earning one first-place vote and 43 points. Creighton was third with 32.

ISU opens its 13th season today when it hosts the SIU Edwardsville Cougars at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Fans can receive free admission to the match by donating at least two non-perishable food items to the Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank when entering the stadium.

    Today is the day for the Thunder in the Valley, and the Terre Haute Triathlon is under new leadership in 2013, the 28th year for the event at Hawthorn Park.
    A former Terre Haute North track and cross country standout, Ethan Page is the race director as the race falls under the reign of Page’s new company, Crossroads Events.

    Momentum was the only thing riding on Indiana State’s baseball game against Bradley on Friday. With a five-game winning streak going, ISU wanted to keep the good vibes going into next week’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
    ISU couldn’t do it.

  • South wins first half of doubleheader against Lawrence North

    Host Terre Haute South kept its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball title hopes alive — and clinched no worse than second place in the process — by downing Lawrence North 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night.
    The second game, which started after Senior Night festivities between games, ended past the Tribune-Star deadline.

  • PREP ROUNDUP: Calleja pitches West Vigo past South Vermillion

    Brandon Calleja had 13 strikeouts to lead West Vigo to a 5-1 victory against South Vermillion in high school baseball Friday.
    Brandon Behringer went 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Vikings, who secured second place in the Western Indiana Conference.
    Kaden Lawson had double for South Vermillion (15-7), which finished 4-2 in the WIC.
