SULLIVAN —
Coming off a 6-4 season with an abundance of skill-position players returning, Sullivan expects to contend for a Western Indiana Conference title again in 2012.
The Golden Arrows finished second to Northview last season, and coach Trent Olson hopes his team can take it up a notch this season. Sullivan hasn’t won the WIC since sharing the 2003 title with West Vigo.
“We feel like we should definitely be in that top half,” Olson said. “Northview’s the big dogs. Year in and year out they’re either winning or sharing the title. Edgewood’s seemed to have been on the rise. Some of us other teams are trying to knock them down.”
Payne Fortner (6-1, 160) leads the returnees at quarterback, directing a talented group on offense. After throwing for 1,326 yards and 21 touchdowns, Olson has confidence in the senior.
“Payne has got really good about knowing when to take chances and when not to,” Olson said. “Payne’s been QB since halfway through his sophomore year. He does a good job, has a great grasp of the offense, can tell people what to do on any play.”
Brooks Weszley (5-9, 175) returns at running back after leading the team with 612 yards rushing.
Michael Hutchcraft (6-4, 185), “a big, tall lanky target,” led the receivers with 36 receptions and nine touchdowns. Zach Willis (6-1, 180) added 11 receptions, and big tight end Jake Kinnaman (6-4, 230) had 10 catches and three touchdowns.
Add in veterans Cameron McNeely (5-10, 160), Marcus Ridge (5-8, 150), Mike Willis (6-2, 170) and Chance Hollifield (5-9, 165) and Olson has plenty of weapons to make for an efficient offensive unit.
Olson has some holes to fill on the offensive line, however.
Guard Jon Sullivan (5-11, 170) is the only returning player on the offensive line.
“There’s probably 8-10 guys, freshmen through seniors, that have a chance to contribute on the offensive line,” Olson said.
Freshmen Colton Harrison (6-0, 255) and Sheridan Sater (6-0, 225), and sophomores Frankie Risley (6-5, 272) provide some strong young options.
Junior Caleb Ader (6-3, 240) will move up from the junior varsity, and senior newcomers are Dutchie Crabb (5-8, 168) and Dylan Knotts (5-9, 185).
Many of those players will make up the defensive line, where the Golden Arrows will also be replacing multiple starters.
Hollifield is the top returning tackler at his linebacker spot. He’s joined by Weszely and senior Jason Jones (6-1, 168).
“Chance is kind of leader on defensive side. Just a go and make plays type of guy,” Olson said.
The defensive backfield is full of experienced players.
Ridge and Hutchcraft are a formidable safety duo, while Zach Willis, Mike Willis, Fortner and McNeely provide quickness at cornerback.
“Our unit has got to be more concerned with stopping the run than the pass because we’ve got enough skill kids to guard people,” Olson said. “Our defense played really well last year. The defense created a lot of turnovers last year. We were flying around a lot. If we can continue to do that, we’ll be in good shape.”

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
