Girls basketball: Patriots overwhelm Warriors

MARSHALL, IND. — Terre Haute North was simply too much — too much size, too much athleticism and too much experience —for a rebuilding Class A Turkey Run team Tuesday night in the Warriors’ gym.

North won its girls basketball season opener 66-5, leading 35-0 at halftime.

But Patriots’ coach Mike Allen wasn’t interested in the score. Allen wanted his veteran team to execute well to be prepared for the rest of its schedule, particularly the Terre Haute Tip-Off Classic that begins today.

While North shot over 50 percent (28 of 52), the Patriots got plenty of easy layups off Turkey Run turnovers. North also had 15 turnovers.

“We really wanted to concentrate on execution. We didn’t take care of the ball the way I’d have liked to,” Allen said. “I thought everybody played well. Our zone defense, we stayed pretty active on that. Give Turkey Run credit, they played hard the entire game. It’s always a help when we have a size advantage.”

Nicole Anderson, the Patriots’ 6-foot-1 point guard, started her first game at her new position and she set up her teammates well in the opening quarter. Her steal and pass ahead to Layne Curley made it 7-0 in the early going, and Anderson found newcomer Gabby Staub on the low block to end the first quarter. Staub completed a 3-point play for a 20-0 North lead on the play.

North’s 6-2 center Adrienne Pritchard tied with Curley for team-high honors with 12 points, while Staub added 11 on 5-of-6 shooting.

“Gabby’s a nice addition to our team. Very athletic, finishes around the basket really well,” Allen said.

Anderson led North with seven rebounds and five assists. Her four steals were second to Curley’s seven.

Turkey Run committed 27 turnovers on the night. First-year head coach Jeff Thompson of the Warriors had four freshman playing extensive minutes.

“There’s some things that you just learn from playing, that experience gives you — when to drop, when to close out hard, when to switch, things like that,” Thompson said. “We’ve got basically first-year players and the veterans, Jordan Goddard and Chelsie Wood have shown a lot of patience with those girls. We’ve just got to learn. We just need to get in the gym as much as we can.”

Terre Haute North is back in the gym today against North Central in the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tip-Off Classic at West Vigo. The Patriots hope to show they’re the best team in the Wabash Valley.

“We’re looking to make a statement in the tournament. Definitely want to win that first game and see what we can do on Saturday,” Allen said. “Hopefully we’ll get to the championship game, and I assume it would be [Terre Haute] South — but anything can happen in girls basketball.”
