BLOOMINGTON —
There is no game waiting for Indiana University’s football team at the end of this week, no chance for the Hoosiers to wipe away the frustration from the season’s first loss.
It’s bye week for the Hoosiers (2-1), who showed in Saturday’s 41-39 loss to Ball State how far they’ve come and how far they still have to go.
IU was penalized 12 times, including three pass interference calls and four personal fouls.
“Penalties will hurt you, and they did tonight,” junior cornerback Greg Heban said. “They did snowball, I thought; it felt like once we got the first penalty they just kept piling on.”
Ball State (2-1) gained 206 yards rushing — just 48 fewer yards than Indiana had allowed in the first two games combined.
“Their backs are patient, big O-line that kind of leans on you, and we didn’t tackle well,” head coach Kevin Wilson said.
And Indiana, which had eight sacks in the first two weeks of the season, failed to bring down Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning.
“They’ve got a great offensive line [that was] keeping our D-line off their quarterback,” Heban said.
Despite all that, plus yet another quarterback change when Cameron Coffman — himself a replacement for Tre Roberson — suffered a hip pointer and was replaced in the fourth quarter by Nate Sudfeld, the Hoosiers still had a chance at victory.
Sudfeld’s 2-yard TD pass to Shane Wynn with 53 seconds left had put the Hoosiers ahead 39-38. But Wenning guided the Cardinals down the field, completing a clutch sideline pass to Willie Snead with one second left to set up Steven Schott’s game-winning 42-yard field goal.
There was plenty of talk about whether Snead made the catch before going out of bounds.
“They reviewed it, what are you going to say?” Heban said.
But there will be no excuses from this Indiana team, who lost to Ball State for the second year in a row. The Cardinals have won three straight overall in the series.
“I think in the third quarter or fourth quarter last year, last year’s team would have found a way to give in, just give up, even in the third quarter,” Heban said. “This team, we’ve worked so hard in the offseason, we’re going to play to the last whistle. We’re going to go into this bye week ready to work.”
“This is a good team, and a lot better than most of you guys [in the media] think with your little smirks out there,” Wilson said. “This is a good team that’s going to get a heck of a lot better every second of every day, I promise you. We’re going to put together a team this school can take some pride in. You saw it today. We didn’t fold up. Those days are long gone.”
Wilson said the work ethic and striving for improvement has to start with the coaches.
“As coaches, we didn’t do a good job,” Wilson said. “We had a phenomenal week, the way [the players] worked. I liked the way we were in the locker room [after the game]. We’re changing the mindset with those kids.
“We didn’t do a good job at halftime making adjustments,” Wilson said of him and his coaching staff. “We just kind of laid an egg [in the third quarter] and that is on me.”
The Hoosiers’ next game is on the road, as they open Big Ten play at Northwestern on Sept. 29. IU has just one conference road win over the previous four seasons, the 34-31 overtime win at Purdue in Bill Lynch’s final game as head coach in 2010.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
