CLINTON —
Bob Kyle is a first-time winner of the Spaghetti Open, which concluded Sunday at Matthews Park.
Kyle fired a 67 on Saturday and took a two-shot lead into the final round. He went 35-36 for 71 and finished with a 6-under-par 138 score.
Rick Schelsky took second with 140 followed by Tom Jones with 141, Travis Turpen with 142 and Ryan Luce with 144 to round out the top five.
The four top finishers had the only sub-par rounds in the final round; Luce shot even-par 72.
Turpen had five birdies in carding a 32 on the front nine on Sunday to trail the leader by one shot at the turn but had problems on No. 11, while Kyle had one of his three birdies on that hole.
“Travis played super today. The cold, windy conditions helped me win … equaled things out with the long hitters,” said Kyle, who is the baseball coach at Rockville High School.
Schelsky is the girls basketball coach at Western Boone and is the defending champ in the Terre Haute City that begins this Saturday. He and Kyle both intend to play in the four-round event.
Jeremy Roehm nipped Kyle Stevenson by one shot to win the first flight. Both of them had 74 in the final round.
Ron Alabaugh and Charlie Kluesner each carded 73 on Sunday — the low rounds outside of the championship flight — and tied for first in the second flight.
Other flight winners were Greg Gruner, Mark West and Glen Jones.
Tournament awards will be presented at a dinner this evening at The Castle. A field of about 100 took part in the tournament.
