Friday night washout

Strong storms push games back to today

LINTON — It’s free high school football this afternoon at Linton, where West Vigo and the host Miners resume their game that was interrupted by lightning Friday night.

When play resumes at noon today, there will be 6 minutes and 21 seconds remaining on the clock in the second quarter and Linton’s Dyllanne Deischer will be lining up to attempt her third extra point of the game. There will be no admission charged for fans coming for the second day, Linton athletic director Charlie Karazsia announced.

Although Miner quarterback Austin Karazsia has already passed for 117 yards in a little less than 18 minutes, the Vikings — trailing 20-0 — have been hurt worse by running back Koye Kaiser.

Kaiser returned the opening kickoff to his own 45-yard line, then capped a 55-yard, 10-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.

On Linton’s second drive, Kaiser broke away for a 37-yard touchdown run, and his 46-yard punt return set up the Miners’ third touchdown — a 14-yard pass from Karazsia to Grant Stamm — just before the first lightning was spotted.

West Vigo answered Linton’s first drive — on which eight of the 10 plays were passes, the only runs a fourth-down conversion by Kaiser and the touchdown — by marching steadily up the field on the ground.

Danny Creasey had the bulk of the carries, with Skyler Warnock and Jacob Creasey earning a pair of first downs with runs of their own, and the Vikings had fourth-and-1 at the Linton 27.

The Miner defensive front, led on this play by linebacker Dane Rupska, smothered the fourth-down play to get the ball back, however. Just to prove it was no fluke, after Kaiser’s breakaway run gave Linton a two-touchdown lead the Miners also stopped West Vigo’s next three running attempts for no yards — plays made by Wyatt Franklin, Jackson Bohnert and Paul Goodman — to force a punt.

The Vikings got a defensive stop of their own, but couldn’t overcome Kaiser’s punt return on their next defensive series.

The touchdown catch by Stamm was his fourth of the game for 62 yards so far as the junior looks ready to take up some of the slack for injured veteran receiver Cole Bradbury, who was in a walking boot Friday. Austin Karazsia has completed 11 of 18 passes so far.

It was approximately 7:40 p.m. when Stamm scored, but then officials spotted lightning in the distance and sent the teams off the field for a mandated 30-minute delay.

No rain fell for almost an hour — although lightning never stopped — and both teams were prepared to wait out the delay as long as was necessary. Linton had a conference game canceled in 2006 when weather stopped both the Friday night game and prevented it from being played on Saturday, Charlie Karazsia said.

But as glimpses at the radar showed that a Friday night resumption was going to take a while — and that today’s chances to play look much better — the decision was made to resume play today. Torrents of rain within minutes of that decision indicated it was a wise choice.

• North and South never got going — Terre Haute North played the national anthem for its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference game against Center Grove, but then lightning began and the game never kicked off. The Patriots and Trojans will try again at 11 a.m. today.

South was at Carmel and the game never started. After a long delay, the game was postponed. Varsity kickoff is 12:30 p.m.

• Sullivan leads Northview — Sullivan and Northview got to the 6:28 mark of the first quarter before Mother Nature intervened.

Before she did, Sullivan Payne Fortner scored a touchdown to put the Golden Arrows in front. Sullivan was on the Northview 15-yard line when play was stopped. The game will resume at 4 p.m. today.

• Postponed games — Other games in the Wabash Valley that were postponed or delayed. All will kickoff today.

Riverton Parke at Seeger, 11 a.m.; Olney at Marshall, 1 p.m.; Turkey Run at Cloverdale, 2:30 p.m. (Turkey Run leads 8-6); South Vermillion at Brown County, 6 p.m.; Casey at Palestine-Hutsonville, 6 p.m.; Rockville at Attica, 7 p.m.; North Central at North Vermillion, 7 p.m.; North Putnam at South Putnam, 7 p.m.

At press time, there was no determination on Union at Tecumseh.

  • Hughes, News & Views: Terre Haute ‘hacker' accomplishes Mark’s Par Three first

It’s no secret that Mark’s Par Three is not the most difficult golf course in Vigo County.
But it’s enjoyable for beginners and golfers of modest skill levels and it doesn’t lack for activity during warm-weather months.
Open since 1964, it’s had its fair share of players test their skills, probably several better than 43-year-old Brian Brown of Terre Haute.

  • Prettyman getting comfortable as boss

At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

Indiana State junior Justin Gant has been invited to travel to the Ivory Coast this summer as part of an Athletes In Action basketball tour.
“I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to not only play basketball with and against some great players during this tour, but to also share my Christian faith with those in the Ivory Coast,” Gant commented. “I’m looking forward to growing as a person by delivering aid to those in Africa and by sharing my faith with those we come in contact with. This will also be a great chance to continue to improve on the basketball court just before we start our workouts at Indiana State in the fall.”

When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.)
