Terre Haute South secures Vigo County girls golf crown

Pickens leads Braves as medalist with 39

TERRE HAUTE — Consistency paid off for Terre Haute South in girls high school golf action Thursday at Rea Park.

South had four scores separated by seven shots to win the Vigo County championship with a season-low 169 score. Terre Haute North carded 186 and West Vigo 247.

South won its fifth county title in the past seven seasons, ending North’s two-year run as champ. The Braves are 7-0 in nine-hole matches.

“All of the players stepped up today and played well to win,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.

South senior Alexandra Pickens shot 39 to earn medalist honors.

“I had a rough start … but had a lot of pars to pull out the score,” said Pickens. “I’m pretty happy.”

Ali Danielson and Katelynn Gordon each had career-low 42 scores for the Braves and Taylor Monroe closed out the scoring with 46.

“The players did a great job of grinding it out after a bad hole or bad shot. It was really good for us to get under 170,” Stuckey noted.

Nicole Anderson and Anna Potter each had 42 to lead the Patriots. Ciara McClain had 50 for the Vikings.

“It’s a lot of fun coaching this team with Nicole and Anna and our young girls. We teach them the fundamentals and watch them get competitive,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.

Next — South (7-0) plays South Vermillion and Sullivan at Geneva Hills next Thursday. North (3-3) will compete in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference match on Sept. 8 at Oak Tree. West Vigo plays Linton at Rea Park on Tuesday.

  • Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat

    Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now.

     Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
    The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006.
