METRO ROUNDUP: Play starts today in Men’s City Golf tourney

TERRE HAUTE — Play begins today in the Show-Me’s Men’s City Golf Tournament.

All players will play the first two rounds today and Sunday at Rea Park.

The field will be flighted for the final two rounds to be played next weekend at a site or sites to be determined.

n ISU falls to SIU — At Carbondale, Ill., Indiana State (2-9, 0-1 MVC) fell 3-0 to the Southern Illinois Salukis in its opening Missouri Valley Conference match of the season Friday.

The Sycamores battled the Salukis tough in the first game before falling 25-22. The Sycamores found themselves down six at 23-17 before rallying to cut the Saluki (10-1, 1-0 MVC) lead to 24-22.

In the second set both teams battled back and forth, trading points with neither team getting an advantage and late in the set the score was tied 24-24. The Sycamores were not able to pull ahead, however, as the Salukis went on to win the second set 26-24 and take a 2-0 set lead over the Sycamores.

In the third game, the Salukis got ahead of the Sycamores early 14-6 and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Sycamores 25-21.

Senior Shea Doran led ISU with 19 kills for a .417 attack percentage.

With the loss, the Sycamores fell to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the MVC.

    Cindy and Mark Wilguess are the inspiration behind the Taghleef Team. Cindy herself fought this battle with cancer and won. Last year she led her team to be the No. 1 fundraisers in the Relay for Life.

  • Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat

    And the crowd went wild.
    Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now.

     Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
    The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006.
