One week after Indiana State’s football team played up a division, the Sycamores get to see how the other half lives.
Division II Quincy visits Memorial Stadium at 2 p.m. today for ISU’s home opener. It’s the first in a three-game homestand for the Sycamores. ISU plays its next three of four games at home.
If ISU’s annual “money game” against Football Bowl Championship Series teams is the Sycamores’ Super Bowl, the Division II Hawks will likely treat the game against the Sycamores as theirs.
In a way, given that ISU (0-1) was in the same boat against Indiana a week ago, it should give ISU an idea of the mentality Quincy is approaching the game with.
“We’re not approaching it any differently than we do any other week. We know we have to give our best effort,” ISU linebacker Dillon Painter said. “We know how our attitude was when we played Indiana. In our minds, it was our big game of the year. They’re looking at us kind of like that.”
The Quincy series — this is the third game ISU has played against the Hawks in four seasons — is a relic of another time in ISU’s football history. The series was agreed upon when ISU was the worst FCS program in the nation.
Quincy, of course, symbolizes that era more than any other ISU opponent. The Hawks, then a NAIA school, dealt ISU a notorious 26-20 overtime defeat in 2009 — ISU coach Trent Miles’ second season.
However, that game proved to be ISU’s nadir. Since then, ISU has put together a pair of winning seasons. Included in ISU’s 6-5 2010 campaign was a 56-22 thrashing of Quincy.
The 2012 version of the Hawks got off on the wrong foot. Quincy lost 54-31 at Northwood last Saturday. It was Quincy’s first game as a Division II school and the first game for Quincy coach Tom Pajic.
Miles was hesitant to talk much about the Hawks. A concern Miles did have was that there’s little film to study regarding Pajic’s philosophies and schemes.
“It’s kind of scary. We’ve only seen one game on them. It’s a new staff and a new system. They might come in and do something totally different from what was on the film,” Miles said.
Quincy running back LeDarion Shelby ran for 65 yards. Quarterback James Chmelik completed just 10 of 24 passes for 204 yards, but had three go for touchdowns. Jarrod Sergent had three catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Though no one on the Sycamores would say it, if ISU handles Quincy as a FCS team should, it could be an opportunity for several reserve Sycamores to get playing time.
One Sycamore who won’t play is starting safety Donovan Layne. He was injured against Indiana last week, and though he returned to action against the Hoosiers, he did not practice this week and will not play today.
Nor will center FN Lutz, still out with a knee injury. Lutz ran the defensive scout team in practice this week.
One bonus for ISU fans — ISU track and field Olympic hurdler Greggmar Swift will be at Memorial Stadium at 12:45 p.m. to sign autographs.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
