Northview football in rare rebuilding season

BRAZIL — Since the 2004 season, few teams in Indiana have dominated their conference as Northview has.

Northview has won seven out of the eight Western Indiana Conference championships since it broke through for its initial WIC title in 2004. The Knights have sacked and pillaged the WIC ever since, compiling a 43-3 record inside the conference. All three losses occurred in a 2-3 down year in 2008.

Northview has won the last three WIC titles without a blemish. It has won 19 WIC games in a row. Only one WIC team — Sullivan — was within a touchdown of the Knights in 2011.

It’s an enduring legacy and it’s one the Knights have fiercely protected during George Gettle’s coaching era.

But in 2012, the Knights’ castle could be under assault as it hasn’t been in a long time. Northview lost a significant amount of its primary contributors of recent seasons — including all-everything Damon Hyatt, who took 1,309 total yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions on the defensive side with him when he graduated.

There are 59 players on the roster overall for Northview. Twenty-nine of them are underclassmen and Gettle has just 12 seniors at his disposal.

“We’re 100 percent unequivocally rebuilding the program. Sometimes that happens. We graduated two big senior classes back-to-back. We’ve got a lot of young kids coming in.

“We’ve got good kids who have worked hard, but it’s a lot of freshmen and sophomores,” Gettle said.

The most experienced established player the Knights have back offensively is running back Jesse Miller, a senior who rushed for 1,069 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2011.

Past that, the Knights will try out their kids. Miller is the only All-WVFCA player back for Northview of the six chosen either first team, second team or honorable mention last season.

“We’re not necessarily looking at wins and losses. We’re looking at celebrating the first down, the first three-and-out, the first interception, the first field goal. We’re taking baby steps. We’ll celebrate the little things and build this thing back up to what we’re accustomed to,” Gettle said.

Gettle said few things are settled. He said he had no set depth chart yet.

“It’s still a little bit early for that. As far as bona fide depth chart — these are our 1s and 2s? — we’re not there yet. We want to keep competition open,” he said.

Northview settled on 5-foot-11, 160-pound freshman Tucker Stewart at quarterback during its scrimmage against Terre Haute South last Friday. Stewart engineered two scoring drives.

Other young players who have made an impression, according to Gettle, are sophomore defensive end-running back Derek Mills (6-2, 220), sophomore defensive back-running back Zach Hyde (5-10, 165), freshman wide receiver Hunter Reagan (6-4, 180), freshman defensive back-wide receiver Ben Girton (5-7, 155) and freshman linebacker-running back Jacob Dean (5-7, 195).

There is some experience in tow. Senior linebacker Drake McKee (6-1, 205) returns.

Other seniors include defensive back Brad Marshall (5-8, 140), wide receiver Coan Williams (5-10, 150), wide receiver-defensive back Jordan Tracy (5-8, 150), linebacker Eric Timberlake (5-7, 190), defensive back Travis Campbell (5-10, 170), defensive end Chad Godsey (5-10, 185), defensive lineman Mike Miller (5-11, 190), offensive lineman Jack Winn (5-11, 235), offensive lineman Justin Sampson (6-4, 265) and offensive lineman Zach Williams (6-0, 250).

“Even though we’re young and youthful, we expect to win the conference this year. We expect to win all of our home games. We expect to be competitive and challenge for a sectional,” Gettle said.

Northview opens its season Friday at home against Indianapolis Broad Ripple.
