Wayne Newton Post comes up short in Legion World Series bid

MIDLAND, MICH. — The two cities are in adjoining states, yet many hours apart. Still, Wayne Newton Post 346 has found an American Legion baseball rival in Moline, Ill., Post 246.

Or maybe nemesis is a better word.

Moline handed Post 346 its first defeat in Great Lakes Regional play late Sunday night, then came back to win two more games on Monday — the second a 3-2 decision over Post 346 that sent the Terre Haute team home and sent Moline to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C., later this week.

If that sounds like a familiar story, it should. Two years ago, when the Great Lakes Regional was at Mattoon, Ill., it was also Moline that handed Post 346 its only two losses.

“They’re good people, and they’re fun to play,” Post 346 manager John Hayes said. “When we get together, it’s always a battle.”

It’s a battle Hayes won’t mind waging in Terre Haute next season, the manager indicated. “Next year, when we’re hosting this thing, maybe we’ll win it,” he said.

Moline put together a pair of three-run innings that were Post 346’s downfall. A three-run first inning late Sunday led to a wire-to-wire 7-2 win for the Illinois team, and a three-run third inning was all that T.J. Decker allowed on Monday in a 3-2 loss.

Post 346 managed just 11 hits in the two games. Sam Wolf got two and Tony Rosselli hit a solo homer in the Sunday game. Preston Tofaute’s two-run single in a late rally Monday that wasn’t enough.

“We had a good season,” Hayes pointed out. “Any time you can win the state tournament and be runner-up in a national regional, it’s a good thing.

“We had some good kids again,” the manager added, “and we’ve got some really good ones coming up [through the junior legion team]. We’ll be looking for some of them to carry the load next year.”

Post 346 is the Great Lakes Regional host — and will play as the host team — at Bob Warn Field in both 2013 and 2014.
