NASSAU, BAHAMAS —
Indiana State’s Dawon Cummings scored 11 of his 18 points in the first quarter on Monday and he helped the Sycamores defeat the Real Deal Shockers 116-75 in the second game of ISU’s three-game exhibition trip to the Bahamas.
Cummings — a junior college transfer from Coffeyville Junior College — scored nine of those 11 first-quarter points via made 3-pointers as an ISU 3-point onslaught proved to be the Real Deal Shockers’ undoing.
Cummings also had a team-high seven assists. Jake Kitchell led ISU with 11 rebounds.
Khristian Smith, Justin Gant and Devonte Brown each had 12 points. Brandon Burnett had 10.
The Real Deal Shockers — a team in the Bahamas’ National Professional Basketball Association — took a 9-5 lead midway through the first quarter when the Sycamores got untracked. A Manny Arop layup ignited an 8-0 run that would put ISU in front for good.
Cummings, Khristian Smith and Gant all scored during the rally, which put ISU in front 13-9.
The game was put out of the Real Deal Shockers’ range when ISU hit five 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the first quarter (the game was played under international rules). Cummings and Lucas Eitel traded 3-pointers before Cummings hit another trey at the buzzer to put ISU in front at the first break 28-16.
In the second quarter, it was ISU defense that carried the day. The quick-firing Real Deal Shockers played into ISU’s hands, but ISU also forced the Real Deal Shockers into poor shots. The Real Deal Shockers would make only one field goal in the second quarter and would have 16 empty possessions in the period. The Real Deal Shockers scored only 14 points in the period.
ISU took advantage and pushed its lead to 54-28 by halftime. Khristian Smith had six points in the quarter. Arop and R.J. Mahurin also had more than one field goal in the period.
ISU would pour it on in the second half against a Real Deal Shockers’ team that was committed to a fast-break style. ISU’s lead ballooned to 84-50 by the end of the third quarter.
Devonte Brown scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Sycamores didn’t let up. ISU’s margin peaked at 47 points before it settled for the 41-point victory. ISU increased its point total in each quarter, finishing with a 32-point final stanza.
Every Sycamore that played in the game scored, save center Mike Samuels. The junior college transfer returned to action after he suffered a head injury in ISU’s 95-76 victory over the Commonwealth Giants on Sunday.
ISU will finish its trip as it plays the PJ Stringers at 9:30 p.m. tonight. ISU was originally scheduled to play the Bahamas All-Stars in its Bahamas’ finale.

FROM THE PRESS BOX: Close, but no cigar, theme for ISU sports in 2012-13
When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.) -
