METRO ROUNDUP: Indiana State women open soccer season today

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s women’s soccer team opens its 2012 season Friday at Memorial Stadium and will be assisting the Catholic Charities food bank during the game.

Fans can receive free admission to the game against SIU Edwardsville by donating at least two items while entering the stadium. The food bank is asking for non-perishable items, canned goods and boxed items while also asking for fans to avoid glass jars.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. between the Sycamores and Cougars. Fans that cannot make it to Terre Haute for the game can follow along with live statistics at GoSycamores.com and live in-game updates on Twitter at @ISUsoccer.

Football

• Sycamores ranked 23rd — Indiana State is ranked No. 23 in The Sports Network Preseason Poll announced Monday.

ISU is one of five Missouri Valley Football Conference teams to garner the preseason recognition. North Dakota State, the defending national champion, is ranked No. 2 while Northern Iowa is No. 9. Youngstown State is No. 13, Illinois State is No. 19 and the Sycamores are No. 23.

All 10 MVFCS teams received at least one vote.

The Sycamores are coming off back-to-back 6-5 campaigns, marking the first time the program has seen consecutive winning seasons since 1995 and 1996. Another winning season in 2012 would give ISU three in a row for the first time since 1967-69.

The Sports Network has already honored running back Shakir Bell in the preseason by naming him to the Walter Payton Award watch list; he finished second in the Payton Award voting last season. Likewise, defensive end Ben Obaseki is on the Buck Buchanan Award watch list after appearing there as well in 2011.

Indiana State begins the 2012 season at Indiana at 8 p.m. Sept. 1, a game that will be nationally televised on The Big Ten Network.
