Post 346 two wins from World Series

Midland, Mich. — Wayne Newton Post 346 is within two victories of a trip to North Carolina for the 2012 American Legion World Series after its third straight win in Great Lakes Regional baseball play on Sunday.

After winning its first two regional games with dominant pitching — allowing just one run on three hits in 16 innings — the Terre Haute team found another way on Sunday, overcoming an early 8-2 deficit for a 9-8 win over the host team, Midland Post 165.

Just four teams remained in the tournament early Sunday night, Wayne Newton the only undefeated team left. Midland played an elimination game later Sunday, followed by a late game between Post 346 and Moline, Ill.

A Post 346 win late Sunday would send it to today’s championship game, with the other survivor having to beat Terre Haute twice. A Post 346 loss late Sunday would give it the bye today in a three-team, single-elimination final.

Terre Haute’s chances didn’t look good Sunday after Midland put a seven-run inning together in the top of the third inning and added another run in the fourth.

But reliever Pete Lannoo shut down Midland the rest of the way, and Post 346 used 13 singles to keep chipping away at the lead.

Zach Milam, the team’s hottest hitter in its two games against Michigan opponents with a combined 7-for-8 performance against Adrian (on Saturday) and Midland, got a two-run single during a three-run rally that tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.

And after two were out in the bottom of the eighth, Cody Thornton walked and stole second, scoring what proved to be the winning run on a hit by Preston Tofaute.

Highlights — For Post 346, Zach Milam was 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs; Kodie Girton was 2 for 3; Scott West was 2 for 4; Preston Tofaute was 2 for 5 with the game-winning RBI; Sam Wolf had a hit and an RBI; and Cody Thornton had an RBI and scored the winning run.

Next — Wayne Newton Post 346 (38-11) played Moline, Ill., later Sunday night.
