Schelsky, Turpen top field after City’s first weekend

4 former winners in top 10 after 2 rounds

TERRE HAUTE — Rich Schelsky has a one-shot lead over Travis Turpen going into the third round of the Show-Me’s Men’s City Tournament.

Both players were under par in the second round played Sunday at Rea Park. Turpen had a one-shot lead in the event after the first round.

Schelsky had a 66, going 32-34, and has a 7-under-par 135 score for 36 holes. Turpen shot 69, going 36-33  and stands at 136.

Seven other players are under par in the Terre Haute Golf Association event and four of them had sub-par rounds on Sunday in warm conditions with a breeze at times.

Seven-time winner Tom Jones carded 69 twice and is third with 138. Eight-time winner Ted Kaperak and Ryan Roscoe are tied for fourth at 139. Kaperak had 70 on Sunday and Roscoe, seeking his first title, carded 69, going 33-36.

Mike Roshel, Abe Nasser and Dusty Jovanovich are next with 142 scores. Roshel has two 71s and Nasser had 70 on Sunday.

Charlie Kluesner is the other player under par with 143 and Scott Hess rounds out the top 10 with even-par 144.

Schelsky had six birdies in his second round and has 11 for the two rounds. “My putting has been good. I cleaned it up a little today. I hit a lot of fairways for birdie chances and capitalized on most of them,” said the 2011 champ.

Turpen had five birdies and two bogeys in the second round.

Jones went 34-35 to shoot his 69. “I haven’t done anything to shoot myself in the foot so far,” he said.

Roscoe said winds were a “little tricky” at times on Sunday. “The scores were there to be had,” he said.

The field will be flighted for the final two rounds and all players are slated to play Hulman Links on Saturday and will wind up at Rea Park on Sunday.

Sideliners — Members of the staff at Hulman Links were called into action early Sunday morning when Rea Park pro Dave Kennedy was hospitalized and is slated to undergo surgery today to remove his appendix.

• Mark Harvey stands at 148 for the tourney. He has had four nine-hole scores of 37 so far for two 74s.

• Four players shared the skin pot for the second round.

• Four former winners are in the top 10. Turpen, Roscoe, Jovanovich, Roshel, Nasser and Kluesner all are seeking their first championship.

Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. What the Sycamores weren’t out of was heart, guts and clutch performances from some unlikely sources. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
