SOFTBALL SCENE: Team Bud takes third at coed state tourney

TERRE HAUTE — Following last week’s news that local softball fortunes had improved with Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair’s seventh-place finish in the Amateur Softball Association men’s Class D state finals, this weekend’s news is even better.

Team Bud, playing in the National Softball Association coed state tournament, finished in third place with a 4-2 tourney record. In doing so, Team Bud recorded wins over TCOB 22-12, Shockers 20-8 and 17-14, and Frozen Ropes 31-21. Their losses were to Singers 13-2 and Bat Hit Crazy 18-13.

Leading the way offensively for Team Bud were Jason DeSanto, Clay Huffman and Katie Iocoangeli. Also playing for Team Bud were Jackie Mathis, Amanda and Maegan Payne, Whitney Reynolds, Dusty Batchelor, Justin Thompson and Randy Winkler.

Team Bud, as well as several other local coed teams, will be participating in the ASA coed state tournament in mid-September.

Another local participant in the NSA coed tournament was the DIY Rental team, which finished 2-2 in tournament play.

• Avon results — In other tournament news, Cahill’s and the Eddie Bennett All-Stars finished with 2-1 records in round-robin play at Avon.

The Eddie Bennett All-Stars recorded wins over two solid opponents, the Plainfield Eagles and Wicked Styxx. Especially noteworthy was their come-from-behind win over the Wicked Styxx team. Their loss came at the hands of a team from Paris, Ill.

Playing for the Eddie Bennett All-Stars were Kevin Nichols, Eddie Bennett, Travis Sutton, Zach Morgan, Dave Leppert, David See, Shane Chesshir, Winkler, Jason Hinton, Chad Wilguess, Denny Smith and Ron Brown. It is anticipated that several of the players mentioned will be playing together as a team new to the local softball scene in 2012.

Scores and opponents for the Cahill’s games were unavailable at press time.

• Brent Long tournament — Several local coed teams are participating in a tournament this weekend to benefit the Brent D. Long Memorial fund.

Among the local participants in the 14-team affair are Fox Canteen, First Financial, Maryland Community Church, Temple Inland, FOP, Nevins Township Volunteer Fire Department and Mecca Tavern/Green Machine.

Tournament play was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Spencer Field and continue at 8 a.m. today, lasting throughout the day. The public is encouraged to come out and support this worthy cause.

• Saline City tourneys — Saline City will be hosting two tournaments over the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Coed play is scheduled Sept. 3-4, while men’s play will take place Sept. 5. Teams interested can contact Ryan Persinger at (812) 699-2301.
