SOFTBALL SCENE: Myers family softball tradition carries on

TERRE HAUTE — This past Jan. 10, local softball icon Wayne Myers passed away leaving behind two brothers, Fred and Bill, son Terry, daughter Elaine as well as grandchildren Haley, Whitey and “Chicky.” In addition, the Indiana Amateur Softball Association was left without its commander in chief.

On a more personal note, I am presently going through my first summer of local softball without the guiding presence of Myers. While I didn’t see Wayne on a daily basis, I always knew that I could get equipment, questions answered and guidance whenever needed. He had always been there for me, as well as all Indiana ASA teams, umpires, managers and players. He also provided support for the national ASA by staying in constant touch with the national office in Oklahoma City.

In short, for myself, Indiana ASA and ASA nationally this summer without Myers is your first summer without a vital family member at your side. Wayne, we miss ya.

Before closing, I would like to note that the rich Myers family tradition in softball is being carried on by his great niece Carlee McFarland, an outfielder on the Terre Haute Terror 12-and-under girls fastpitch team. After a recent tourney victory, Carlee took the first place trophy to the cemetery and left it at beloved great uncle Wayne’s gravesite.

Carlee, I’m sure Wayne is proud.

In recent ASA state tournament play, the Elkins Brothers Tree Service men’s fastpitch team finished in a tie for seventh place with a 2-2 record. Elkins Brothers opened tourney play with a 4-2 victory over Kokomo Steel. Following their initial victory, they dropped a 7-4 game to eventual state champion Wabash Crush. Elkins Brothers recorded a 17-7 win over Wabash Valley in loser bracket play before being eliminated by first game opponent Kokomo Steel by a 5-4 score.

NSA state tournament results are in for the men’s E and coed divisions, with local squads making their marks in both affairs.

In coed play, the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team earned a third-place finish and the right to advance to the NSA Coed World Tourney in Indianapolis this October. Wolfe’s Auto Auction recorded wins over Bye You Bombers 8-4 and Swat Softball 15-8, before falling to Snap You Off 7-5 and I’d Hit It 25-10.

Sara Milner and Mike Johnson of the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team earned all-tourney honors for the play.

In the Men’s Class “E” NSA state tourney local teams, Hi-Comm and Diamond Cutters finished with 2-2 and 0-2 records, respectively. Scores and opponents were unavailable at press time.

lt softball appears to be alive and well in Parke County this summer. Montezuma plays host to a women’s league with eight teams taking part, while Mecca has a eight-team coed league playing at its facility.

The Montezuma women’s league presently has teams from Bloomingdale, Tangier, Rockville, Terre Haute, Cayuga, Dana and Montezuma playing on Saturday afternoons through early October. Anyone interested in watching softball on a late summer Sunday afternoon are encouraged to drop by the park.

See ya at the park.
