Softball scene: ‘Lost weekend’ in state tourneys for Valley teams

TERRE HAUTE — The old Ray Milland film “The Lost Weekend” may aptly apply to the efforts of our local softballers during last weekend’s Amateur Softball Association state tournaments.

The combined record of the seven Wabash Valley participants was a less-than-sterling 4-14. Below, you will find the grisly details.

In the men’s slowpitch Class B state finals at Avon, the Ballyhoo Tavern’s attempt to recapture some of its lost glory was foiled when it went 0-2. The Ballyhoo squad was sent packing after losses to Badgers (17-7) and Nolan’s (15-13).

The MSP Class C tournament at Crawfordsville was, for me, the most surprising of the weekend’s tournaments. This was the year I expected EZ Auto Sales (formerly Century 21) to break through with a solid finish. Also, another Valley participant, DeHart Rentals, had proved capable of faring well against top-flight competition. In the end, only one Valley team garnered a victory and that was the Boston Pizza squad (formerly Risinger Insurance).

Boston Pizza opened with a 4-3 win over Hoopland Farms before losing to PNA 17-7 and James Medical 15-9. Both DeHart Rentals and EZ Auto Sales finished with 0-2 marks. EZ Auto Sales was waylaid by Brew Crew 28-8 and eliminated by Wermer Truesdale 7-2. DeHart Rentals dropped games to Beaver News 9-6 and All-in-softball 7-2.

The MSP Class D tournament at Evansville proved most successful for Valley entrants. Maurizio’s Pizza (formerly Dean’s Party Mania) opened with consecutive wins over K&W; Vinyl (11-2) and D&D; Interiors (11-10). Following the two victories, Maurizio’s suffered setbacks to Mike Fonner Carpet (11-9) and K&W; Vinyl (9-6).

Another Valley participant, the Terre Haute Yankees, earned an opening-round triumph over Brew Ha’s by a 14-3 count before dropping games to Graber Construction (28-8) and E-Sox (20-8).

Chop Shop endured a 0-2 tournament with losses to Mike Fonner Carpet (8-3) and Turf Doctor (15-1).

In short, it wasn’t a good weekend for local softball efforts.

The local coed kickball championship was recently won by the Starbucks Coffee team. After losing its first game of the season to Kickin’ the Balls by a 4-2 count, Starbucks earned the league title with a solid 8-4 win over the same Kickin’ the Balls team.

Congrats to Starbucks and coach “The Don.”

Teams interested in participating in the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation’s fall slowpitch softball leagues should be aware of the Friday deadline.

The fall kickball deadline is still to be determined.

Information may be obtained by calling Torner Center at (812) 232-0147.

Good luck to the Terre Haute Prescription Shop team as it travels to Evansville to participate in the MSP Class E South state finals.

Let’s hope this local squad can reverse the earlier-mentioned trend.
