Softabll scene: O’Brady’s team never loses it’s enthusiasm

TERRE HAUTE — A couple times a year, I like to devote some column space to a team that probably won’t win a league title or compete in state tournament play. In doing so, it reminds me of the fact that the overwhelming majority of adult league teams simply enjoy playing a night or two a week in local league play for competition’s sake.

A case in point would be the Terre Haute Park and Recreation Tuesday men’s league at Spencer Field. Excluding the league’s top five competitors — Tabco, Crawlworks, Cubs, Chop Shop and The Law Office Of Charles Hear — would leave teams fighting for places six through 11.

Included would be Whisky Barrel, Lang’s Body Shop, Sony/DADC, Wabash River, Beef O’Brady’s, Great Dane and Smith’s Aerospace. Frequently taking their lumps when competing against the more competitive teams, these six usually battle it out among themselves for bragging rights.

A team I find particularly interesting is Beef O’Brady’s. Hovering around .500, they are always ready to give their best effort despite occasionally being overmatched. Formerly sponsored by Fast Track Apparel, the Beef O’Brady’s team shows up every week with renewed optimism and puts forth a good effort.

The roster includes: Bob Brown (player/manager), Brian Brown, Bryan Nacke, Shawn Klotz, Tommy Klotz, Mike Sanders, Joey Bennett, Larry Bennett, Mike Fitzek, Paco Hoopingarner, Brent Hoopingarner, Jim Jones and Evan Jones.

n Kickball at Memorial Park: Memorial Park, former site of many softball games over the years, is now home to the Terre Haute Park and Recreation’s adult co-ed kickball league. Playing on Wednesday’s, the seven-team league is in its second year of operation.

This year’s top team is Starbucks Coffee. Currently undefeated at 7-0, Starbucks hopes to extend their perfect mark to a season-ending 12-0.

Currently playing for Starbucks is: Jason DeSantos, Jenny DeSantos, Erin Hovey, Lindsey Martin, Landon Martin, Scott Saylor, Andrew Rubel, Chad Henderson, Donella Henderson, Ashlee Lochbaum, Emily Hewitt, Juan Carlos Montanez and Kelly Layne.

League Director Rudy Mendez encourages interested groups to stop by and see what’s brought some new life to old Memorial Park.

n ASA tournament: Teams interested in participating in tournament play previous to the scheduled ASA state tournament can contact Chris Patterson at (812) 236-7475. A warm-up tournament is scheduled for Spencer Field the weekend of July 15-16. The deadline for entering is Wednesday.

The deadline for ASA state tournaments is rapidly approaching. Interested teams should contact their local commissioner immediately.

n Get well: A quick get well to ASA State Commissioner Wayne Myers’ assistant, Phyllis Myers. She recently underwent surgery and is recovering at home. Hurry up and get well, the ASA needs you.
