Softball Scene: Terre Haute ready for first-time city tournaments in July

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, working in conjunction with several interested softball parties, will be hosting city championship tournaments for both men’s and coed softball teams.

The men’s tournament is July 6-8, while the coed tournament is July 12-15. All games will be played at the Spencer Field facility in Terre Haute.

In hopes of attracting the attention of local squads, the entry fee will be $100 with a three-game guarantee. The entry deadline for the men’s tournament is July 2, while the deadline for the coed tourney is July 9.

The motivating factors for these tournaments are numerous. On the part of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, it is hoped that the tournaments will help spark a renewed interest in the adult softball program. For local men’s and coed teams, it will offer an opportunity to play on Terre Haute’s best slowpitch facility and to temporarily settle the debate as to who’s the best among local teams.

As a softball enthusiast, I would enjoy seeing these tournaments be successful. It would allow for the crowning of city champions and make use of much underutilized Spencer Field.

An open invitation is being extended to men’s teams such at Outkast, Crawlworks, the Hitmen, Beef O’Brady’s, Last Call and Hi-Comm, while coed squads such as First Financial, National Guard, Fox Canteen, RTS Construction, Wolfe’s Auto Auction, Hamilton Center and Cottonwood Corner/Pepsi are among potential participants.

• Lots of coeds — During the past several seasons, the most popular brand of slowpitch softball has been the coed variety. This season is no exception, with the number of coed teams outnumbering the men’s teams.

In Brazil, there are nearly 20 coed teams playing in the YMCA proghram, with 10 teams in the open division and several church coed teams playing in the church league. Brazil’s resident No. 1 squad presently is Cottonwood Corner/Pepsi.

The Terre Haute Family Y has 19 teams enrolled in its coed league play. First Financial, a local coed powerhouse, boasts a 12-0 league mark, while other solid teams include National Guard, RTS Construction and Hamilton Center.

Another local league offering coed play is the Terre Haute Church League. This year the league has 11 participating teams enrolled.

Interested coed squads can contact both the Terre Haute Family Y and the Brazil YMCA for information concerning fall league coed play.

• Wolfe’s successful — Staying with coed play, the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team has enjoyed a successful season to date. Heading into last week’s Strawberry Festival Tournament, the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team had won two tourney titles in Montezuma and Avon. In addition, the team finished second in the strong Texas Roadhouse Open hosted by the Avon Softball Park.

Team members include Eric and Holly Weustefeld, Chris and Jen Morse, Jeff Stevens, Keith Kindberg, Dano Armstrong, Matt Mack, Travis Funk, Tia Deaton, Sara Milner, Kris Gentry, Emily Gwaltney and Erica and Jessica Ketner.

• Dates to remember — Interested teams should keep in mind the ISA Men’s Slowpitch Class D state tournament being hosted in Terre Haute. Slated for the weekend of July 23-25, the winning team will earn a berth to the national ISA tournament at Polk City, Fla.

For further information or entry, contact John Benton at (812) 877-2566.

See ya at the park.
