SOFTBALL SCENE: Teams give some pep to area men’s softball

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley softball action picked up briefly at Spencer Field last Saturday as four men’s slowpitch squads competed in tournament play.

Byeaux Softball, The Hitmen, Pizza King and Paris Stars helped breathe a little life into the moribund men’s adult softball scene.

The tournament called for a four-team, round-robin format followed by a seeded single-elimination tournament.

In the round-robin portion, The Hitmen and Pizza King finished with 2-1 marks, while Byeaux Softball and Paris Stars went 1-2. The Hitmen earned the No. 1 seeding as a result of their 23-13 trashing of Pizza King.

The single-elimination tournament saw Paris Stars upset The Hitmen 21-11 and Byeaux Softball slipped past Pizza King 17-16. In the championship game, Byeaux Softball defeated Paris Stars 28-17.

Leading the way offensively for Byeaux Softball were familiar local names such as Kevin Kull, Zach Morgan and Jason Hinton. Added to the team’s already-potent offense was one of Indiana’s best offensive players, Brandon Dillon. These four, in addition to the timely hitting of the remaining Byeaux Softball squad, proved too much offensively as the day wore on.

Also playing for Byeaux Softball were Dan Daugherty, Chuck Federle, Ron Allen, John McDonnall, Cole Vicars, Josh Wolfe, Chris Talbot and Justin Fowler.

Through the cooperative efforts of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department and program supervisor Brandy Lanahan, there is an ongoing effort to rekindle interest in adult softball locally.

As such, another tournament has been slated for July 2 at Spencer Field. The number of openings available will be limited in order to keep it a one-day affair. Interested teams can contact me at (812) 877-2566.

In addition to weekend tournament play, Spencer Field will be the host facility for the second annual city tournament. Tourneys in the mid-July event will be offered for men’s and coed teams. The coed tournament will offer play for competitive and recreation-level teams.

Tournament games will take place during the week so they will not interfere with weekend tournaments. Dates for the city tournament will be announced soon.

Interested teams can get further information by contacting Lanahan at (812) 232-0147 or me at (812) 877-2566.

The initial city tournament, conducted in 2010, saw Budweiser capture the men’s title and Wolfe’s Auto Auction win the coed championship.

See ya at the park.

John Benton can be reached by phone at (812) 877-2566.
