SOFTBALL SCENE: Brent D. Long Tournament a success on and off field

TERRE HAUTE — Somebody forgot to tell the Tykal’s American team that they weren’t the favorite in the Brent D. Long Tournament last weekend at Spencer Field. The Vincennes-based team marched through the tournament without a blemish on its record. In claiming the title, the Tykal’s American ream recorded wins over the Vincennes Eagles 6-2, F.O.P. 18-5, Joan and Yogi’s 21-4, Noose Knuckles 14-8 and F.O.P. 11-9.

F.O.P, the pre-tourney favorite with Kevin Kull, Zach Morgan and Rick Robins, finished second by reeling off five consecutive wins after an opening-game loss to the champions. They lost in the championship game, and Moose Knuckles took third place with a 3-2 record.

The tournament was notable for its financial success as well as the many hours contributed by volunteers. Among the volunteers: Harsha Behavorial Center and Clinco personnel led by Bre Fox, Brandy Lanahan, Terre Haute Park and Recreation personnel and umpires Ryan Carter, Kevin Brown, Chris Patterson and Rodney Smith.

The tournament was able to raise more than $4,000 toward the Brent D. Long Memorial Fund.

In other local tournament action, the Cahill’s men’s team won a round-robin tournament hosted by the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation department at Spencer Field. After finishing with a 2-1 record in the round robin, Cahill’s defeated the Lawrence Stars 20-9 and All-American Auto Repair 38-18. The championship game between All-American Auto and Cahill’s witnessed Cahill’s jump out to a 17-2 lead after one inning while en route to an eventual 38-18 victory.

• More congratulations are in order for Morgan and Kull. Both were recently named to Indiana All-Star teams that will represent Indiana NSA Softball in early November when they will travel to Florida to participate in the national state championship tournaments.

Kull plays for Sinister, a team based in Michigan, and was a member of the national championship team in 2010. For Morgan, who plays for the Central Indiana based Rabid Bats, this is his first all-star selection.

• Crawlworks/All-American Auto Repair will be traveling to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend to compete in the ASA MSP Class E national tournament.

n For those looking for softball to watch on the local scene, I highly recommend the Saline City Labor Day tournament. Coed play will continue today, while a men’s tournament will be contested Monday. Admission is free.

• Two tournaments have been scheduled for play at Spencer Field on Terre Haute’s north side this month.

A coed tournament has been slated for Sept. 12-13, while a small-ball tournament will be played Sept. 26-27. Anyone interested in participating can contact me at (812) 877-2566.

See ya at the park.
