SOFTBALL SCENE: Wabash Valley slowpitch team takes seventh at state

TERRE HAUTE — News from the state softball front has improved as a result of Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair’s seventh-place finish in the ASA MSP Class “D” state tournament this past weekend. With their finish, this is the first local team with a .500-or-better record in state tournament play.

Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair recorded wins over Mancino’s/Hoosier Floorcare 17-2 and Oakes Auto 15-14, while losing to Magnaserve 15-14 and R&G Construction 22-17.

As a result of winning the Dudley/Tanel 360 Challenge series, they will be advancing to the ASA MSP national tournament in Columbus, Ohio, over Labor Day weekend.

Playing for Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair is Kevin Nichols, Eddie Bennett, Travis Sutton, Jason DeSanto, Randy Winkler, Dusty Batchelor, Jeff Long, Kelly Chesshir, Shane Chesshir, D.J. Chesshir, Derrick Pierce and Jared Lumsdon.

Coed action is heating up south of Terre Haute as teams start to prepare for the ASA Coed state tourney for the weekend of Sept. 9-11 in Lafayette.

In Shelburn this past weekend, Stefancik’s emerged from the losers bracket to double dip the previously undefeated Copeland’s team, winning 24-14 and 19-18.

This weekend, Carlisle will be hosting a coed invitational as a fundraising effort to help defray burial expenses for Madilynn Lutz, who passed away at the age of two months. Ten teams are expected to participate.

Also taking place this weekend will be the NSA Coed state tournament in Indianapolis. Two local squads, Team Bud and DIY Rentals, will be competing in the 10-team affair. Both teams are slated for 8 p.m. games against TCOB and Rockin’ Pitches, respectively.

One sure indication that fall is rapidly approaching is the start of the Montezuma women’s league. Starting in late July and continuing through September, this league is a staple on the local softball scene. This year’s league consists of seven teams from Parke, Vermillion, Clay, Fountain, Montgomery and Vigo counties. Games are scheduled from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Anyone interested in being added to a team roster can contact Annie Marshall at (765) 245-2207.

Another indication that another season is winding down is the jockeying for players for the season to come. Local travel teams such as Outkast, Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair and Hitmen all look to undergo radical changes for the 2012 season. For those familiar with the softball scene, the rumor mills are churning out revamped rosters at lightning speed.

Once the dust clears, I will try to keep softball fans informed as to what to expect for the 2012 season.

See ya’ at the park.
