Softball Scene: ‘Old School’ softball at Saline City withstands test of time

As the college football season begins and Wabash Valley adult softball action starts to wind down, those interested in a dose of “old school” softball should travel to Saline City this weekend. Played on a single unlit diamond, the tournament has withstood the test of time in an era of multi-diamond complexes.

Due to its location, most teams hang around the park and enjoy themselves while waiting for their next game. In short, it’s a relaxed atmosphere and family friendly.

This year’s event will feature a 9-team coed tournament Saturday and Sunday followed by a men’s 4-team round-robin tourney Monday. Both events will feature teams from Brazil, Terre Haute and Greencastle.

I would encourage anyone interested to make the trip to Saline City this weekend to witness some down-home softball. Games are scheduled to begin Saturday at 10 a.m. and continue through the daylight hours until late on Sept. 14.

• Good luck to the Chop Shop women’s Class C team and the Crawlworks men’s Class D squad as they travel to their respective ASA national tournaments this weekend.

The Chop Shop will be heading to Springfield, Mo., while Crawlworks ventures to Salem, Va. Both teams earned the right to advance as a result of third-place finishes in their respective ASA state tournament.

Check back here for results.

• Results are in from the Terre Haute church leagues’ summer programs. Congratulations to the winners:

A-league winner: Crosslane Community.

B-league winner: Faith Wesleyan.

C-league winner: St. George

Coed-league winner: Union Christian.

• The Union Hospital coed league has continued to grow the last couple years. Originally played at the Terre Haute Family Y facility, the Union Hospital league moved to the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Spencer Field facility for the 2009 season.

Evidence of the league’s popularity is its growth from nine teams in 2009 to 13 in 2009.

Played on Thursday and Friday evenings at Spencer Field, the league will conclude play with a league tournament in late September.

Good job to all involved …

• Results are in for last week’s Avon round robin, and the local Budweister team, assisted by some Outkast team members, took home first place.

Budweiser recorded wins over Crawlworks 19-13, Eagles 18-8 and Tom’s Marine 25-10. Travis Sutton’s 10-for-11 and Kevin Kull’s 9-for-11 hitting performances led the way for Budweiser.

The Budweiser squad will be heading to Urbana, Ill., for an ISA national tournament the weekend of Sept. 12-13. Crawlworks finished 1-2 in the round robin.

See ya’ at the park.
