Softball Scene: Crawlworks’ hard work to host tournament pays off

Recent Softball Scene columns have been devoted to efforts to raise funds for various causes. The opening segment of this week’s column will stick with that theme.

This past weekend the Crawlworks men’s team hosted an invitational tourney to raise money for their trip to Salem, Va. for the ASA men’s Class “D” national tournament. As with efforts of this type, they usually rely heavily on the work of several team members. This event was no different.

Contributing to the successful tournament were the following Crawlworks players: Chris Nidiffer, D.J. Chesshir, Shane Chesshir, Randy Winkler, Eric Smith, Bill Knierim, Mike Mederis and Nate Hall. Also contributing to the success was the Northside Community United Methodist church who made their softball facility available.

I have an affinity for persons making an effort such as the Crawlworks team, the 180 Energy Drink team or the UPS organization (as discussed in last week’s column) to put on a successful softball tourney. In part, due to the fact I spent 20 years working with Larry Wilson and others on the old Glenn Civic Center diamonds. I know what it takes and it’s not always easy. A big congrats and thanks to all involved.

The tournament was won by the G.O.A.T. Softball Club. In winning the G.O.A.T. Softball Club recorded wins over the G.E. 14-5, Mill Dawgs 23-1, Goose Neck 18-9 and Expos 13-8. The Expos handed the G.O.A.T. Softball Club it’s only loss in a 12-11 contest highlighted by Travis Chesshir’s walk-off two-run home run.

Playing for the winning squad was Clay Huffman, Tyler Akers, Ryan Hayes, Ryan Nicholson, Kevin Hicks, Eric Tresler, Derrick Pierce, Shane Chesshir, Andy Jones, David Kingery, Brad Pierce, Chris Dehart and Darren Buck.

Two local entrants participated in the NSA Class “E” state tournament this past weekend. Jasonville’s 180 Energy Drink team finished with a 2-2 mark during tourney play. The 180 Energy Drink team recorded wins over Terre Haute Pharmacy 11-5 and Indy Stars 17-7. They were defeated by Grippos 15-12 and Game Time 20-16.

In their brief stay the Terre Haute Pharmacy team finished with an 0-2 mark.

With the approach of the Labor Day weekend, it’s time again for the Saline City softball tournament. This long standing event has taken place over the Labor Day weekend for several decades.

This year’s event will feature a two-day (Saturday and Sunday) coed tournament and a one-day (Monday) round robin for men. Interested teams can contact Ryan Persinger at (812) 691-0902.

Over the years I have fond memories of this tournament. I have been informed that it started as a baseball tournament and has evolved into a slow pitch affair. If my memory serves me correctly, the tournament was organized for a time by J.R. Cooprider, manager of the old Clay City fast pitch team.

See ya at the park.
