SOFTBALL SCENE: Wabash Valley well-represented in state tournamen t

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley was well-represented in the ASA Coed Class D/E state tournament last weekend at the Avon softball facility.

Of the 29 participants, nine had connections to the local “softball scene.”

Of the local participants, Temple Inland went 4-2, good enough for third place. Temple Inland reeled off four consecutive wins to open tourney play before dropping two Sunday contests.

In doing so, it recorded wins over CDB/Gary’s Tax Service 13-3, Fast Track Eagles 15-4, I’d Never Hit It 21-17 and Loose Cannons 12-11. Temple Inland was defeated by Boats ‘n’ Hoes 15-9 and I’d Hit It 14-5.

Among those playing for Temple Inland were Chad Cress, Kevin Wilt, Rodney Smith, Mike Walker, Harrison Prusz, Pete Cottom, Nikki Coakley, Lacy Porter, Anne Marshall, Jasmine Rivera.

Hi-Comm, representing the Jasonville area, and Terre Haute’s Wolfe Auto Auction each finished 3-2 and tied for ninth.

Other Valley participants and their records were Schurick’s Heating/Crawlworks (Brazil) 2-2, Last Call (Hillsdale) 2-2, Melissa Copeland Photography (Shelburn) 1-2, Fast Rack Eagles (Terre Haute) 1-2, Kid Country Day Care (Sullivan) 0-2 and Orsburn Softball (Jasonville) 0-2.

As most softball aficionados are aware, the period following state tourneys and the season’s end are utilized to get next year’s teams in order. As such, it looks as if one local softballer has an opportunity to move up the ladder.

Kevin Kull, the local Budweiser team’s starting shortstop for the last three years, has been picked up by the nationally ranked K&G/Reds/Astros/TPS men’s slowpitch team. Playing with this team last weekend, he earned his first national championship ring as the K&G/Reds/Astros/TPS squad went undefeated in the NSA Open World Series at Cookeville, Tenn.

As a result of his performance, Kull is playing in O’Fallon, Ill., this weekend as the team seeks another prestigious title in the NSA Class B World Series. In addition, he is expected to accompany the team to Las Vegas in early October for the NSA Class B Super World Series.

With Kull moving on, the Budweiser team is looking for a cleanup-hitting shortstop who plays solid defense. If you happen to see someone who first that description, please contact me ASAP.

The first annual high school alumni slowpitch battle between Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, Northview and West Vigo is slated for Saturday at Terre Haute’s Spencer Field. Interested graduates of those schools can contact team organizers to participate — Clay Huffman (Northview), Ryan Carter (North), Fred Crowthers (South) and Jason DeSanto (West Vigo).

The tournament will use a four-team round-robin format, with each team playing three games.
