SOFTBALL SCENE: Swingers win state title

TERRE HAUTE — The Swingers from Greencastle double-dipped Carlisle Plaza 10-7 and 8-6 to win the ASA coed novice state title in Lafayette last weekend. Until the consecutive losses, the Carlisle Plaza team, based in Sullivan County, had moved through the tournament without a loss.

In earlier tournament play, Carlisle Plaza put the Swingers team into the losers’ bracket with a 14-8 win.

Several other Wabash Valley squads participated in the 32-team tournament. Schurick’s Heating from Brazil finished in a tie for seventh place with a 3-2 record, while Moose Knuckles recorded a 2-2 mark. Other participants records were as follows: Copeland Photography 1-2, Temple-Inland 2-1 and Team Bud 0-2.

Previous to winning the ASA coed state title, the Swingers won the always highly-prized Saline City coed tournament title Labor Day weekend. Moving through the tourney with an undefeated record, the Swingers outscored their opponents by a 67-12 margin. In doing so, they recorded 8-3 and 25-3 wins over second-place finisher Schurick’s Heating from Brazil.

In men’s tourney play, the Barger Stars defeated Darrin Chaney, Inc. by a 17-17 score to take the tourney crown.

• In coed action in Terre Haute, Cahill’s went undefeated in a Spencer Field round robin tournament last week. In winning the tourney, Cahill’s defeated Harley Davidson 12-2, McCullough’s 18-8 and Lawrence Stars 14-4 and 16-6.

• For those interested in coed tournament action, two fund raising tournaments will be held the weekend of Oct. 1-2.

The first annual Swing for a Cure coed softball tournament is in Saline City. Teams interested in participating can obtain further information by contacting Molly Ascheman at (812) 239-8126 or Megan Koers at (812) 870-2053.

The Devon Monore LeDune coed softball benefit will be played in Sullivan the weekend of Oct 1-2. For more complete information, contact Crystal Monroe at (812) 564-2672, Colleen Overton at (812) 201-5754 ro Amanda Mason at (812) 239-3110.

Funds raised in both tournaments will be donated to efforts to help defray medical costs and the fight against cancer.
