Softball Scene: Valley teams have mixed results in state tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — While local participation in the Indiana Amateur Softball Association Coed Class D/E state tournament was great, the results were mixed. Local squads represented eight of the 26 entrants, but could finish no higher than fifth in the final standings.

Leading the way for local interests was the First Financial team, which finished fifth with a 4-2 tourney mark. First Financial had hoped to improve on its 2008 runner-up status.

Temple Inland and Boats-N-Hoes finished play with 2-2 records, while Melissa Copeland Photography and FS Magazine were 1-2 during tournament play.

Key Associates, L.J. Michaels/Schurick’s Heating and VFW all finished with 0-2 records.

Scores and opponents for tourney play were unavailable at press time.

• Budweiser nipped — Budweiser’s attempt to capture at national ISA title was derailed in Urbana, Ill., this past weekend when the team lost the title game to KBI by a 14-12 score. KBI, the top-ranked Illinois team, had defeated the local Budweiser team earlier by a 12-11 score.

Budweiser recorded wins over Subway 23-15 and Posse 16-10. Budweiser players Tyler Akers, Kevin Kull, Paul Rupska and Clay Huffman were named to the all-tourney team for their efforts, while Kyle Knapp was awarded the tournament defensive player award.

• Still more tournaments — For local teams still interested in playing, the Avon softball facility has released its fall season tourney schedule.

Oct. 2-3 — Annual Chad Combs Memorial All-Nighter

Oct. 17 — Coed and men’s Beer Fest tournaments

Oct. 31 — Halloween Tournament

Saturday round robins will also be offered for all interested teams. For further information or entry, contact Steve Boone at (317) 902-8243.

• Outkast tournament — The local Outkast team is planning to host a men’s tournament the weekend of Oct. 10-11. It is anticipated that several good Wabash Valley teams will participate. Interested teams can contact Todd Heim at (812) 841-6043.

• Farewell … almost — With the softball season rapidly coming to a close, the Softball Scene column will go into temporary hibernation. It will return for a postseason wrap-up column before settling in for another basketball season, which will serve as a prelude to the 2010 softball season.

Thanks to the many people who have made the column possible by calling in scores and other softball information.

See ya’ at the park.
