SOFTBALL SCENE: Valley teams strong at tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — The results are in from last weekend’s Bedford All-Nighter and Wabash Valley softball interests fared well in the 42-team men’s slowpitch tournament.

The first-place squad included locals Kevin Kull, Zach Morgan and Jason Hinton, while the Outkast team finished a strong fifth.

On the winning side, Kull, Morgan and Hinton were part of the Dirty Dogs, which won their first four games before dropping the championship of the winners’ bracket game to Mac’s Heating and Air. Following the loss, they defeated R3 and double-dipped Mac’s to win the tourney crown.

Outkast’s tourney path was much more difficult. After dropping its opening game to Silverbacks by a 27-11 count, the Outkast team reeled off six consecutive wins. In doing so, it defeated Electron 17-8, Brew Crew 12-3, Mahoney Homes 18-3, Silverbacks 28-20, Cutters 14-1 and Brad’s Brass Flamingo 17-13 before being eliminated by R3 by an 18-4 score.

Leading the way offensively for Outkast was Tommy Slaughter with a .730 batting average for the weekend. Kevin Wilt stroked five home runs for Outkast during the eight games.

Also playing for Outkast were Chad Cress, Travis “Pinky” Sutton, Brandon Vest, Kevin Nickels, David See, Todd Hein, Mike Walker, Sean Risley, Craig Hunkler and Harrison Prusz.

Congrats to all Valley players involved.

This weekend finds several teams involved in tournament play. Most notable are the Crawlworks/All-American Auto and Outkast teams as they ventured to Crawfordsville to participate in the Strawberry Festival men’s slowpitch tourney.

Outkast entered the 11-team B/C division and was slated to play a very strong Dynasty team. Currently ranked second in southern Indiana’s top 25 teams, Dynasty was likely to provide tough competition for the sixth-ranked Outkast squad. The B/C division of the Strawberry Festival traditionally has been one of Indiana’s strongest invitational tournaments.

Crawlworks/All-American Auto was slated for a 9 a.m. start Saturday in the 44-team D/E division. As with the B/C division, the D/E division is loaded with many of Indiana’s best teams.

Good luck to Outkast and Crawlworks.

In tournament play locally, the Hamilton Center and Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department co-hosted a “Help Strike Out Cancer” fundraising tournament Saturday at the former Family Y facility at First and Farrington streets. Six local squads entered to help raise funds for a good cause.

Another Terre Haute-based men’s travel squad, The Hitmen, planned to play in an Avon round-robin Saturday evening.

Results from this weekend’s tourney play will be available in next week’s installment of the “Softball Scene.”
