Budweiser team has mixed results in national slowpitch regional tourney play

TERRE HAUTE — The local Budweiser men’s softball squad ventured to Columbus, Ohio, this past weekend to participate in the 82-team ASA MSP national regional tournament. The results of their tournament efforts were mixed.

Budweiser opened play with two convincing wins over M&S Softball of Lewisburg, Pa., 7-0 and Norwood, Va., 22-10. Following their initial two wins, Budweiser dropped into the losers’ bracket with a loss to Team Scatter from Marion, Ohio, by a lopsided 16-6 score.

In losers’ bracket play, Budweiser managed a win over TLC from Michigan 17-14, before being eliminated in a wind-altered contest by Versailles, Ohio, by a 7-5 score.

Playing for the Budweiser team were the following players: Tyler Akers, Darren Buck, Ryan Carter, Ryan Hayes, Clay Huffman, Bo Hunkler, Kyle Knapp, Kevin Kull, Ryan Nicholson, Jason Payton, Gary Potter, James Singleton Jr., and Rick Robins.

Leading the way offensively for the Budweiser team, Akers was 10-for-14 and Kull was 12-for-16. Payton swatted two home runs, while Akers and Kull hit one each.

Budweiser is slated to participate in the Avon Tourney of Champions, with several other local teams, the weekend of Oct. 2-3.

• Often times, I have commented on tournaments whose revenue are being utilized for purposes other than paying for uniforms or tourney entry fees.

This will certainly be the case for an event being organized by the friends and colleagues of Rob Pugh. An effort to help defray medical costs incurred in a fight against a rare form of cancer will take the form of a softball tourney this coming Saturday at the Terre Haute church softball field on Terre Haute’s north side.

Teams interested in playing locally, while helping contribute to a very worthy cause can do so by contacting Zac Morgan (812) 236-7880 or Carly at (812) 238-4686.

• Several local co-ed teams will be participating in this weekend’s ASA Novice co-ed state finals being hosted by Avon. Schurick’s Heating (Brazil), Melissa Copeland Photography (Shelburn), Hi-Comm (Jasonville), Wolfe’s Auto Auction (Terre Haute), Temple Inland (Terre Haute), Fast Track Eagles (Terre Haute) and Last Call (Terre Haute) will all be vying for the first co-ed state title in the 29-team affair.

• As a former tourney director, I have to wish the best to Avon’s Steve Boone (ASA co-ed state) and Indianapolis’ Richard Foltz (NSA “D” World Series) as they host 29- and 62-team tournaments this weekend. Facing the prospect of rain and anxious softballers isn’t my idea of a fun weekend.

• Two local fall leagues are set to open fall season play soon. This Tuesday evening, the Ivy Tech intramural league will commence play at Spencer Field, while the Terre Haute Park and Recreation Department leagues are slated for Sept. 15 and 19 starts at the same facility.

Good luck to all involved.

See ya at the park.
