Softball Scene: 8 Valley softball teams competing in 5 different state tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — This weekend several local softball teams are vying for titles in Amateur Softball Association state tournament play. In all, eight local squads are competing in five different state tournaments.

The largest local contingent is playing in the 20-team Men’s Slowpitch Class C tournament at Kokomo. Budweiser, Crawlworks and Outkast — all well seasoned travel teams — will be seeking a state title and a berth to the national championship at Rochester, Minn.

Budweiser played a powerful Acorn Ridge squad in an opening game Saturday, while Outkast played Central Ag. Crawlworks, having a bye in the first round, was to play the winner between Voodoo and Hoover Heating in its opener.

Last Call is Terre Haute’s sole representative in the 35-team Men’s Slowpitch Class D North tournament being hosted by Crawfordsville. As with the previously mentioned Class C teams, the Last Call squad has traveled extensively and expects to expand on early-season success. Last Call opened against 1-Hour Cleaners from Peru on Friday night.

Another local team in state tourney play is the Hi-Comm team from the Jasonville area. Hi-Comm is playing in the ASA Men’s Slowpitch Class D South state tourney at Bedford. Hi-Comm’s opponent was unavailable at press time.

Local interest in the ASA Men’s Slowpitch Class E affair is drawn by both The HItmen and Clinton Cabinet Shop. They are playing in a 31-team tourney being hosted by Indianapolis’s Midwest Sports Complex. The Hitmen opened against St. Clare, with Clinton Cabinet playing Advanced Cable.

Jarvis Coal is playing in the 13-team Women’s Slowpitch Class D/E state tourney, also being hosted by the Midwest Sports Complex. Jarvis Coal, playing out of the Sullivan women’s league, opened against the winner between the Swingers and Wieble Farm.

Good luck to all involved.

• City winner — Wolfe’s Auto Auction captured the coed title of the rain-delayed city tournament this past Wednesday evening with a 16-13 win over Hamilton Center. The Wolfe’s Auto Auction team rolled through the tourney without a loss, defeating Damon’s 19-9, First Financial 7-6 and Cottonwood Corner/Pepsi 25-14 prior to the win over Hamilton Center.

During the highly competitive tourney, Damon’s, Cottonwood Corner/Pepsi and First Financial all finished with 2-2 records.

Playing for the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team during tourney play were Eric and Holly Wuestefeld, Jenny and Chris Morse, Sara Milner, Jeff Stevens, Keith Kindberg, Kristy Gentry, Gary King and Jessica Ketner. Congrats to the new coed city champs.

Before closing, I would like to wish a speedy recovery to Wolfe’s Jeff Stevens, who recently suffered a serious injury while playing in the Q-95 All Night tourney at Indianapolis.

Effingham will be hosting an ISA last-chance qualifier for Class E and recreation league teams the weekend of Aug. 6-7. Interested teams can contact tourney director Charles Pirozzoli at (217) 342-6359.
