Softball Scene: Softball moments of years past

TERRE HAUTE — With the summer softball season coming to an end, I thought it might be interesting to look to past Softball Scene columns and dredge up a few old memories from seasons gone by.

This type of column also serves as a reminder to those presently playing that in a few short years, your achievements will be largely forgotten by those who will be playing in future seasons.

• 2005 — Local highlights included Jerome’s Pizza from Carlisle, Ind., capturing the ASA coed Novice state tournament title with a 5-0 tourney mark. Brandon Vest and Matt Pearison, presently playing for the Outkast men’s team, were Jerome’s Pizza team members.

• 2001 — Chuck Federle was named to the all-tourney team as his Columbus Country Bins team captured the Senior Softball World Championship in Las Vegas. During tourney play, Federle hit a scalding .700.

• 1995 — The Britt Tool team captured the ASA 35-and-over Novice state title in Bloomington. Leading the way for the Britt Tool team was Don Garrison (now deceased) and Kelly Chessir, who swatted five home runs during tourney play … On the fast pitch side, local Terre Hauteans Dirk Joy, Mark Abrell, John Kesler and Mike Andrews played for the Elkhart Fast Tec team in the ASA 40-and-over Masters Fast Pitch national tournament. The finished 3-2 during tourney play.

• 1990 — The Terre Haute Bar Association team finished second in the Indiana Bar Association’s state tourney with a 9-2 mark. Following the 11 games in a two-day period, it was rumored the legal process in Terre Haute would be at a standstill due to pulled hamstrings and aching muscles.

• 1982 — Morgan’s Tavern topped the Famoso’s Pizza squad with a dramatic 16-13 win to earn a first-place finish in the local slow pitch rankings. In fast pitch, the Merchant’s Bank team and C&V Boosters were tied for the No. 1 ranking.

So much for the nuggets from years gone by.

Three teams in local connections will be trying to make good memories of their own when they compete in NSA state tournament play.

Hi-Comm and the Diamond Cutters will be participating in the NSA Class “E” state tournament, while Wolfe’s Auto Auction will be vying for a title in the NSA co-ed state tournament.

Good luck to all as they seek a state crown.
