SOFTBALL SCENE: Tough tournament trail

TERRE HAUTE — Results from various ASA state tournament play continue to trickle in and unfortunately for local softball interests, they are disappointing. The combined record for the Outkast men’s team and the Ladies Last Call women’s team was one win and four defeats.

Outkast, competing in the ASA MSP Class “B” state tournament, finished with an 0-2 mark. In their defense, Outkast had the misfortune of losing to the eventual state champions, Street Kids, by a 13-3 count and then dropping their second game to second-place finisher, Sliverbacks, in a 22-10 game.

As the recent winner of the Show Me’s Terre Haute city tournament, the Outkast team picked the wrong tournament for their bats to go silent. As a result of the 0-2 finish, Outkast is eligible to participate at the “C” level in 2012.

In the ASA WSP Class “D” Tournament, the local Ladies Last Call team fared a little better with their 1-2 mark. After dropping their opening game to the eventual state champion Wild Ones by a 10-0 score, they defeated Mood Swings by a 13-11 count. They were eliminated by Brad’s Brass Flamingo with a 4-2 loss.

Sticking with the state tournament results theme, notice must be given to the efforts of local softball Zach Morgan. Morgan, a former Riverton Parke star athlete, is presently a member of the Rabid Bats team playing out of Indianapolis.

Participating in the NSA Class “D” state tournament recently, Morgan helped his team to a second place finish and a berth in the upcoming Super State Tournament. In doing so, Morgan had a gaudy on base percentage of .674 and led the team with seven doubles.

Congrats to Zach Morgan and the Rabid Bats.

The Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair squad will travel to Bloomington Saturday to participate in the ASA MSP Class “D” South State Tournament. Hoping to improve on their recent 0-2 finish in the ASA MSP Class “D” North State Tournament, the team has fortified their roster with the addition of Kevin Nichols, Travis Sutton and Eddie Bennett.

Another local squad participating in the tournament will be the Hi-Com, Inc. team from the Jasonville area.

Good luck to both teams.

Action in the Terre Haute Park and Recreation summer league has ended with the crowning of the following winning teams.

• Tuesday Men’s League and Tourney Champion, Show Me’s

• Wednesday Co-ed League and Tourney Champion, Pepsi

• Thursday Co-ed League and Tourney Champion, Riverbats

• Sunday Men’s League, League Champion (tie), Cahill’s and Tabco, Tourney Champion, Cottrell’s Fitness

• Show Me’s City Tournament Champions, Copelands (Co-ed), Outkast (Men)

A fundraising tourney has been scheduled in an effort to raise money to allow Bethany Sullivan to travel to Sydney, Australia and play for the USA Softball Team. The co-ed tournament, using a six-man, four-woman format, will be played Aug. 20 at Terre Haute North High School.

Interested teams or individuals can contact Chris Nidiffer at (812) 208-4162, or Sullivan at (812) 870-4625 for further information.

See ya’ at the park.
