Softball Scene: Valley squads fare well at state tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — The results from the Indiana Amateur Softball Association’s MSP Class “C”, “D” and “E” state tournaments are in and local softball interests fared well. Of the five local men’s teams participating, four managed to come away with winning records.

In the MSP Class “C” tournament in Kokomo, two local teams came away with top three finishes. Budweiser finished in second-place with a 7-2 tourney mark, while Outkast placed third with a 3-2 record.

Budweiser opened tourney play with a 14-10 loss to Acorn Ridge and then proceeded to win seven consecutive games before dropping a 25-23 game to state champions N.W.I. Budweiser recorded wins over Wise Guys 25-4, Crawlworks 18-2, Straight Line Lawn 19-8 (eight innings), Weinberg 11-8, Martin Brothers 16-4, Street Kids Softball-South Bend 21-10 and Outkast 19-6.

A tourney highlight for the Budweiser squad was James Singleton Jr.’s two-out, walk-off, three-run home run to earn a come from behind win over Straight Line Lawn.

Playing for the Budweiser team were the following: Tyler Akers, Darren Buck, Ryan Hayes, Clay Huffman, Kyle Knapp, Kevin Kull, Jason Payton, Gary Potter, Rick Robins, Paul Rupska and James Singleton Jr.

Outkast earned a third-place finish by opening tourney play with three consecutive wins before dropping games to N.W.I. 27-11 and Budweiser 19-6. Previous to the losses, Outkast reeled off wins over North Central Agri Power 17-7, Straight Line Lawn 17 -10 and Acorn Ridge 28-26.

Especially exciting was the Outkast win over tourney favorite Acorn Ridge. Down by double digits, Outkast put together an 11-run inning to pull close and eventually won 28-26 with a seven-run seventh inning.

Also participating in the MSP Class “C” tourney was Crawlworks, which dropped games to VooDoo 11-8 and Budweiser 18-2.

In the MSP Class “D” Northern State Tournament, Last Call finished with a 3-2 record. Last Call opened tourney play with a 23-6 drubbing of One-hour Cleaners. Following the impressive opening game win, Last Call was dropped into the loser’s bracket with a 16-12 loss to BWE/Miken. After the loss, Last Call earned wins over Muscle Barn 8-4 and Renegades 14-10 before being eliminated by Shinetime in a 13-1 defeat.

The Hitmen traveled to Avon to participate in the MSP “E” State Tournament and came away with a 4-2 tourney record. Hitmen earned wins over St. Clair 11-1, GTM 9-2, Vaughn Communications 9-4 and Boomshakalaka 11-1. Their losses were to Wicked Styxx 15-1 and ACC 15-9.

Budweiser, Crawlworks and Outkast are slated to participate in the NSA State Tournament play in Indianapolis this weekend.

Local fast pitch interests are still being represented by Elkins Tree Service MFP.

With the decline of fast pitch locally, Elkins Tree Service is forced to travel to find tournament play. Next weekend, Elkins will be traveling to Elkhart to play in the Indiana Amateur Softball Association’s MFP Class “D” state tournament.

The team is composed of many players familiar with the local fast pitch game. Playing in this year’s state tourney will be Rudy Elkins, Frank Elkins, Scott Elkins, Wade Elkins, Jason Fields, Charles Dailey, Jim Swank, Jim Swank Jr., Jon Newburn, Donnie Cottrell, Larry Schaffer, Mike Iacy, Justin Madden, Jeff Sell and Dennis Kesler. The team batboy is Larry Schaffer Jr.

Having sponsored a fast pitch team since 1980, the Elkins family is doing it’s best to maintain Terre Haute’s long-standing fast pitch softball tradition.

Good luck to them this weekend.
