Softball Scene: Outkast heating up at right time with state tournament approaching

TERRE HAUTE — Local softball player and enthusiast Ryan Dehart recently made an astute observation when commenting on the Outkast softball squad. He said, “they’re getting hot at the right time of the year.” Lending support to Dehart’s claim was Outkast’s showing in the recent Hooter’s Invitational hosted by Indy Sports Park.

Playing in a very strong tourney field, the Outkast team finished with a 4-2 record, topping Utugh/Jass Construction 9-2, Indy Bandits 17-2, Ale House 17-0 and Columbus Moose 13-11. Outkast’s two losses were to the eventual tourney winner Gametime 15-6 and runner-up Shinetime 19-8.

Playing for the Outkast squad were the following players: Mike Walker, Tommy Slaughter, Harrison OPruz, Craig and Curt Hunkler, Brandon Vest, Matt Pearison, Dusty Strum, Chad Cress, Ryan Henke, Chris Kramer and T.J. Reese.

The Outkast squad hopes to continue on their hot streak when they participate in the MSP Class “C” state finals in Kokomo the weekend of July 30-31 and Aug. 1.

• The results from the Terre Haute Men’s City Tournament are in and as expected, it was a closely-contested affair with the eventual winner determined by a one-run margin.

Terre Haute’s three travel teams, Budweiser, Last Call and Outkast, all finished the five-team round-robin tourney with 3-1 records. Budweiser, the tourney winner, did so by averaging .33 runs more in their victories than second-place Last Call.

Scores for the tourney: Last Call 20, Outkast 8; Budweiser 22, Cahill’s 12; Cahill’s 17, Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s 7; Last Call 18, Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s 15; Outkast 23, Budweiser 22; Outkast 18, Cahill’s 2; Outkast 12, Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s 6; Budweiser 15, Tabco Beef O’Brady’s 5; Last Call 22, Cahill’s 5; Budweiser 22, Last Call 9.

Leading the way offensively for the Budweiser squad was Rick Robins and Clay Huffman, who were 12-for-18, and Kevin Kull who went 10-for-15. Huffman, Kull, Ryan Carter and Brad Pierce hit two home runs each during tourney play.

Also playing for Budweiser were the following players: Tyler Akers, Ryan Nicholson, Jason Desanto, Kevin Hicks, Ryan Hayes, Darren Buck, Kyle Knapp, Gary Potter and Ryan Dehart.

Making the tourney possible were the efforts of many different contributors. Most notable were the efforts of Brandy Lanahan, Brent Lasher, Shari Manning, Don Corey, Rusty Goodwin, Fred Crowthers and Joe Petty. Mank thanks to all involved in making the Terre Haute City Tournament a great success.

• The outcome of the Terre Haute City coed tourney has been delayed by inclement weather. When play resumes on Wednesday, the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team sits in first place with a 3-0 record. Wolfe’s Auto Auction recorded wins over Damon’s 19-9, First Financial  7 -6 and Cottonwood Corner/Pepsi 25-14.

The Wolfe’s Auto Auction team entered tourney play with several tourney titles to their credit in 2010. Most recent was their win in the Martinsville All-Star Invitational — going a perfect 3-0 with their closest game an eight-run victory.

Playing for the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team in Martinsville were the following players: Eric and Holly Wuesterfeld, Kristy Gentry, Jeff Stevens, Sara Milner, Keith Kindberg, Laurie Cesinger, Dan Armstrong, Emily Gwatley and Gary King.

• Using the recent Terre Haute City Tournament as a springboard, the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a fall league softball program for men’s and coed teams. As such, they have revamped their entry fees and look to incorporate ideas from teams and individuals.

For further information or to offer comments, contact Brandy Lanahan at (812) 232-0147.

See ya’ at the park.
