Softball Scene: Labor Day tourney on slate

TERRE HAUTE — With the arrival of Labor Day weekend, coed tournament action kicks into high gear.

Highlighting Wabash Valley coed action is the Saline City Labor Day tourney, which features nine squads vying for the much sought-after championship crown.

Next weekend, several Valley squads will travel to Kokomo to compete in the Indiana ASA Coed Novice state finals.

This weekend, local softball aficionados are looking to Saline City for their fix. A new tourney champion is sure to be crowned because 2007 winner DeHart’s Rentals is not included in the field.

Monday at Saline City will feature a five-team round-robin with Koehler Farms, Clay City VFW and Sinclair Construction among the teams participating.

Next weekend undoubtedly will be the highlight of the coed season for several Valley squads. Area teams participating in the state finals include Terre Haute First Financial, Chop Shop, DHI, McGlothan Eye Institute, Fast Track Apparel and Cottonwood Corner.

Chop Shop was runner-up in the 2007 state finals.

The Chop Shop women’s team is in Orlando, Fla., this weekend competing in the ASA WSP Class C national tournament. Chop Shop earned a tourney berth as a result of its second-place finish in the Indiana ASA Class C state finals earlier this summer.

Traveling south with the team are Angela Robins-King, Hope Downey, Kim Chaney, Lyndie Alspaugh, Anita Cook, Megan Koers, Cindy Fulk, Lauren Mardis, Angie O’Brien, Shari Elder, Stacey Hall and Nicole Fougerousse. Helping with coaching duties are Richard King, Bruce Downey and Jeff Long.

Good luck to the Chop Shop squad in Florida.

More information regarding the Terre Haute Fire Department’s 25-6 throttling of the Terre Haute Police Department has finally made it to my desk. Highlighting play for the winning team were the performances of Coby Perrelle, B.J. Barnes and Jeff Hodges with a combined 12 hits in 13 at-bats. John Gardner, Bill Berry and Ricky Buddle also contributed three hits apiece.

Gardner and Charlie Karr finished one-two in the home-run derby contest.

In NSA men’s Class C regional play last weekend, DeHart’s Rentals and Budweiser/Clabber Girl finished with 3-2 and 1-2 records respectively.

DeHart’s recorded wins over Lima American Legion, Floors Unlimited and Baseline. Its losses were to Gabe’s Pizza and Reload. Budweiser/Clabber Girl opened tourney play with a convincing 25-20 win over Fairchild Electric before dropping contests to Gabe’s Pizza (11-10 in eight innings) and Top Hat/Goodfellows (12-2).

Both teams have earned berths to the NSA World Series on Sept. 12-14 at Owensboro, Ky.

See ya at the park.
