Softball Scene: Softball time has arrived

Terre Haute-area softball programs are once again in the planning stages, so interested teams and players should contact league administrators as soon as possible.

Listed below is an alphabetical listing of local adult leagues:

Brazil YMCA — Men’s on Sunday afternoons and evenings; church coed on Monday and Thursday evenings; and coed on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. For more information, call Debbie Plummer at (812) 442-6761.

Terre Haute Church — Men’s on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and coed on Friday evenings. For more information, call Todd Hein at (812) 841-6043 or Mike Allen at (812) 466-5366.

Terre Haute Family Y — Men’s on Sunday afternoons and evenings; coed on Tuesday and Thursday evenings; and men’s 40-and-over on Wednesday evenings. For more information, call Jaime Kenning at (812) 232-3358.

Terre Haute Parks and Recreation — Men’s on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and coed on Monday and Thursday evenings. For more information, call Torner Center at (812) 232-0147.

A note of caution for all potential teams, the number of teams that can participate in some of the above-mentioned leagues is limited. My advice would be to call early and reserve your spot to play.

• ASA reclassification — Teams and players interested in applying for reclassification should take note. The ASA Region 7 commissioners meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.

Anyone interested in applying for reclassification must be represented and have the proper paperwork completed and submitted.

Reclassification forms are available from your local commissioner or by contacting me at (812) 877-2566.

As a result of the 2007 ASA state tournaments, the following teams are eligible to reclassify: Clabber Girl and Matco/Labor Link in men’s slowpitch Class C; Terre Haute Rx Shop, Robinson’s Heating & Cooling, River Bats, Maurizio’s Pizza, Matco Tool/Chop Shop and Jackman Law in men’s slowpitch Class D; and The Fury and The Crush in women’s slowpitch Class D.

Remember, reclassification is not automatic. Teams and players must apply for reclassification to receive it.

• Saying goodbye — It is with great sadness that I mention the death of one of the local softball scene’s most well-known persons. On Feb. 13, Kenny Myers lost his long fight with cancer. The local softball community is deeply saddened by the loss.

As former players, managers and fellow travelers in the world of politics, Kenny and I enjoyed many conversations over the years. I, as well as many others, will greatly miss him.

It must be noted that his last days and hours were spent in the company of many of his former teammates and friends. Cyle and Beth Watts, Travis Mason, Tom Kirchner, Charley and Jill Jackson, Rick Bagnoche, Chris Patterson, Cindy Mause-Welsh, Kristin Bailey, Wendi Steiner, Darrin Cronkhite, Jesse Myers and Doug Elliott were among the many who gave comfort and love to Kenny as he carried on his fight.

In closing, I must note that the outpouring of love and the shedding of many tears were testimony to the fact that Kenny Myers touched the lives of many.

Goodbye, dear friend.

John Benton can be reached by phone at (812) 877-2566.
