Softball scene: Local season winds down again

TERRE HAUTE — It’s a wrap. Another season of the Softball Scene has come to a close. The results from several season-ending tournaments can be found below:

The 2007 Brazil Popcorn Festival co-ed tourney goes to Chop Shop[. In winning, Chop Shop moved through the tourney field with a perfect 4-0 record. They recorded wins over DLC 15-3, Buzz 20-3, Schurick’s Heating/Crawl Works (third-place) 13-12 and First Financial (runner-up) 9-7.

In the Chop Shop co-ed invitational, the First Financial team emerged with the tourney title. DWB and Joe Hoops finished second and third respectively. Scores for the tourney were unavailable at press time.

The season-ending men’s league tourney in Brazil witnessed an upset-winning effort by the Terre Haute Prescription Shop. THPC earned the title with consecutive wins over Beef ‘O Brady’s/Tabco 17-0, Schopmeyer’s 18-17 and Floor It 18-5.

Adult players and teams interested in reclassification for the upcoming ASA 2008 season can begin the process by applying prior to the upcoming ASA winter meeting.

Interested parties can obtain a reclassification form by contacting John Benton at (812) 877-2566. The form must be completed and returned by Dec. 7. The state-wide reclassification meeting will take place the weekend of Dec. 14-15.

The DeHart’s Rental team recently made a strong statement about their plans for the 2008 season. In the Final Bash tourney hosted by Indianapolis’ Midwest softball facility, DeHart’s finished second with a 4-1 tourney mark. DeHart’s recorded wins over Second String 16-15, Dirty Dawgs 13-12, Sting 14-12 and Walker’s 27-16. Their only loss was to Thornton’s, a very strong Indianapolis-based team by a 27-7 score.

Combining several Indianapolis area players with locals such as Josh Hall, Jeff Biggs, Chris DeHart and Darren Cheaney, team manager/player Ryan DeHart has his team primed for great success in 2008.

Also, the Clabber Girl team finished second with a 2-3 overall record in the Final Bash.

For interested men’s teams, there will be a last chance tourney hosted by the Chop Shop co-ed team. The tourney will be the weekend of Nov. 9-11. For further information, interested teams should contact Angie Robins-King at (812) 208-0251 or (812) 466-4332.

Both DeHart’s Rentals and Clabber Girl are expected to be among the teams participating.

A get well wish to Clay Huffman, who recently suffered a broken ankle while playing for the local Clabber Girl squad.

Once again, I would like to thank all those who make the Softball Scene possible.
