Softball Scene: Fall coed softball action heats up

TERRE HAUTE — With the culmination of men’s and women’s ASA sate tournament play, the softball focus has shifted to coed league play, as well as invitational and ASA coed state tournament play.

Fall league coed action can be found at Brazil’s Forest Park on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, while the Terre Haute action is taking place at First and Farrington on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Another traditional source of co-ed action is the Shelburn league. The 13-team league commenced play in mid-August and will continue through October. Games are played starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings with a few Sunday afternoon contests scheduled.

Recently, co-ed tourney action has taken place at Saline City. Chop Shop recently earned a tourney title as they cruised through a five-team round robin tourney with a perfect 4-0 mark.

More coed play can be found this week at the annual Saline City Picnic Tournament. Play will start on Saturday morning and continue through Monday as 12 teams compete for tourney honors. The tourney field will include Chop Shop, First Financial, Robinson Heating and Cooling, Madsen Orthopedics (formerly Schurick’s) as well as two Greencastle squads.

For many, the Saline City tourney will serve as a warm-up affair for the upcoming ASA Co-ed Novice State Tournament held in Elkhart over the Sept. 8-9 weekend. As of this writing, six local squads plan on making the trip. They include Chop Shop, First Financial, Cook Law Office, Wible Farms, Madsen Orthopedics and Robinson Heating and Cooling.

Good luck to all involved.

At least two local men’s squads have remained active following ASA state tournament play. Both Chop Shop and Terre Haute Prescription Shop have participated in invitational tourney action lately.

At Odon, Chop Shop opened with a lopsided 29-1 win over Shoals Inn, then dropped two close contests by 13-12 and 14-10 scores. Opponents names in the last two games were unavailable.

The Terre Haute Prescription Shop recently finished with a 3-1 tourney mark in an Avon invitational tourney. Opponents and scores were unavailable.

Teams interested in future invitational action can contact Steve Boone at (317) 902-8243 for Avon tournament information, played every weekend through mid-October.
