Valley softball players move on to fall season

TERRE HAUTE — As another season comes to a close, several familiar events are taking place on the local softball scene.

Fall play has commenced for the Brazil YMCA and Terre Haute Parks and Recreation slowpitch leagues. The Brazil YMCA leagues have coed and men’s action on Tuesdays-Thursdays and Sundays at the Forest Park facility, while Terre Haute Parks and Recreation leagues take place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Spencer Field.

Another annual happening is the jockeying for players for the upcoming season. Several Wabash Valley men’s slowpitch squads are mapping out roster readjustments in anticipation of the 2008 season. In some cases, the roster restructuring looks to be major, while others are fine-tuning an already-solid team. Among those looking to make changes are DeHart’s Rentals, Chop Shop, Maurizio’s Pizza, Matco OutKasts and Clabber Girl.

Congratulations are in order for leagues, teams and individual players for their efforts this past summer.

Individual recognition is in order for Angie Robins-King, Kim Cheney and Hope Downey for their participation in the recent ASA women’s 35-and-over national championships at Gadsen, Ala. The three were asked to play for the Kimball International team as a result of their continued excellent play over the years.

Kimball International finished with a 2-2 mark, which was good enough for seventh place.

Robins-King was singled out for an individual special hitting award, thanks to her solid tournament performance.

Team recognition goes to the following league and postseason tournament champions:

Terre Haute Parks and Recreation leagues

Coed — First Financial.

Tuesday men’s recreational — Beef O’Bradys/Tabco.

Wednesday men’s — Scott’s Custom Color.

Brazil YMCA leagues

Church — Tie between St. John’s and Harmony.

Church tournament — St. John’s.

Men’s — Schopmeyer Farm Supply.

Men’s tournament — Chop Shop.

Coed — Century 21.

Coed tournament — Madsen Orthopedics.

League recognition must go to the Terre Haute Church program for its continued growth. The program now has 41 teams participating and continues to show annual growth. Keep up the good work.

The Clabber Girl men’s team continued its state-tourney struggles recently when it traveled to Muncie to play in the NSA Class C state tourney.

Hampered by a depleted roster, Clabber Girl managed to drop two close contests to strong opponents. Clabber Girl lost to eventual third-place finisher New Era by a 12-10 score, then got eliminated by Hitzfield Construction 12-11.

Leading the way offensively for Clabber Girl were Paul Rupska and Gary Potter, who each ended up 6 for 8.

See ya at the park.
