Softball Scene: Outkasts, Terre Haute Pharmacy are hot teams on softball scene

TERRE HAUTE — Last weekend witnessed two new teams emerge on the local men’s slowpitch softball scene.

The Outkasts and Terre Haute Pharmacy participated in the Worth Classic in Avon in preparation for the upcoming ASA state tournaments.

The Outkasts squad, formerly part of the Chop Shop team, finished second with a 3-2 tourney mark. In doing so, the Outkasts defeated C&W; Tanel twice and Terre Haute Pharmacy once. Their losses were to Clabber Girl 10-7 in eight innings and 14-13.

The Outkasts, who are competing in the Terre Haute Invitational this weekend at Spencer Field, will travel to Evansville for the MSP Class C state tournament in early August. Team members include Brian McMurray, Dusty Batchelor, Chad Cress, Ron Whistler, Jeff Long, Todd Heim and Glenn Parrish.

Another local squad participating in the Worth tournament was Terre Haute Pharmacy. While it failed to win a game, Terre Haute Pharmacy made a good impression by being competitive. The team is hoping to combine the play of veterans like Randy Morelli, Ben Whitman and Levi Sinclair with tournament newcomers Ryan Hayes, Logan Whitman and John Lash.

The Terre Haute Pharmacy team will be playing in the MSP Class D south state tournament Aug. 3-4 at Avon.

The DeHart’s Rentals team earned some respect last weekend with their performance in the NSA Class D World Series qualifier at Indianapolis. DeHart’s Rentals recorded wins over Shelby Material 16-14, Reload 14-3 and Evolution Tattoo 17-15.

Rentals’ losses were to eventual tourney winner Schmidt’s Heating and Cooling 15-14 and tournament runner-up Reload 16-6.

The victories over Shelby Material, Reload and Evolution Tattoo were against highly respected central Indiana squads.

Clabber Girl captured the previously mentioned Worth Invitational last weekend. In doing so, the Clabber Girl team struggled in compiling a 5-0 tournament mark. Two of the wins were of the one-run variety and another was an extra-inning affair.

Clay Huffman’s 15 hits in 22 at-bats and David Kingery’s 12-for-21 performance with two home runs led the way for Clabber Girl.

Clabber Girl plans to compete the ASA MSP Class C state tournament.

A few notes of interest as we travel around the bases on the local softball scene:

• The Terre Haute Invitational tournament began Saturday at Spencer Field. Today’s games will start at 8 a.m. and conclude with the championship game at 2 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend what should be the tournament highlight of the 2007 season.

• The Elkins Brothers Tree Service men’s fastpitch team recorded a 2-1 tournament mark in a round-robin last weekend at Indianapolis. Scores and opponents were unavailable at press time. Elkins Brothers Tree Service will be participating in the ASA MFP Class C state tournament Friday through July 29 at Elkhart.

• Congratulations to the father-daughter efforts of Terry and Beth King. Playing for the Indiana Business College coed team, the Kings managed a pair of hits in a one-sided loss in Terre Haute Family Y league play. Terry, a long-suffering Kansas City Royals fan, is trying to resuscitate a long-dormant softball career.

Good luck to the Kings and the IBC squad.
