TERRE HAUTE — Often times the “Softball Scene” column is devoted to reporting the scores and games for travel teams and individual tournament outcomes.
As a result, we tend to omit the many league teams playing their weekly game for recreational purposes. Therefore, I would like to highlight the efforts of one of the many recreational league teams in today’s column.
The Fighting Pacifists play in the Terre Haute Park and Recreation Wednesday night league at Spencer Field. With a Wednesday evening 12-6 win over Garmong, the team is presently sporting a 2-8 league mark.
Including several members of the local Church of the Latter Day Saints congregation, team members are Dan Rueckert, Darren Wilkinson, Sam Snideman, Brad Phillips, Ryan Jensen, Paul Murdock, Chang-Ting Lin, Paul Yang, Shane Guy, Drew Mathis, Mark Green, Go Fusigawa, John Pethick, Jason Holt, George Chen, Scott Blanton and Kyhle Porter.
The Fighting Pacifists, like the majority of adult teams, enjoy playing at the recreational league level and compete hard on a weekly basis. For that, I would like to say that your efforts do not go unnoticed.

A quick trip around the local softball scene found the following results in slowpitch league play:
The Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s squad recently pulled off a come-from-behind win. Trailing Aisin Brakes 22-12 with two outs in the seventh inning, the team rallied for 10 runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s then proceeded to win with a run in the bottom of the eighth. With the win, it remained undefeated in the Terre Haute Park and Recreation Wednesday League.
In Terre Haute YMCA/YWCA action, the State Farm Insurance team captured the league tourney title with a 20-10 win over the Mad Dogs.
The Brazil YMCA coed league play included a hard-fought contest between Schurick’s Heating and Cooling and Chop Shop. Chop Shop’s 12-10 win ended with a two-out, two-run, walk-off home run by Ryan Carter.

This weekend will see many of the usual suspects traveling to Indianapolis in pursuit of tourney titles.
The DeHart’s Rental team will be participating in an NSA World Series qualifier tourney at the Midwest Softball complex in Indianapolis. It will be competing with 19 other Indiana teams for the right to compete in the national championship tourney.
DeHart’s Rental is scheduled to play a strong Hall’s Produce team in its opening game.
Several other local squads will compete in the Worth Invitational tourney Saturday at Avon. Included will be Clabber Girl, The Outcasts and another Brazil squad (sponsor not yet determined).
The Elkins Brothers Tree Service team will be playing in a four-team men’s fastpitch invitational tourney at Alexander Park in Indianapolis.

In a softball-related item, several Crawl Works softballers were part of a father/son baseball tourney in North Chicago, Ill. The Crawl Works team marched through with a 4-0 mark.
Included on the roster were Kelly Chesshir, D.J. Chesshir, Shane Chesshir, Brian Chesshir, Steve Atwood, Eric Atwood, Scott Malicki, Cameron Malicki, Ron Humphrey, Jeremy Humphrey, Jim Acton, Cody Owen, Jack Slaby Sr., Jack Slaby Jr. and Joe Slaby.

Slowpitch invitational tourney action looks to be returning to Terre Haute next Saturday and Sunday. The Spencer Field facility will be hosting an eight-team double-elimination tourney which will include several local squads.
Included in the tourney field will be Ballyhoo Tavern, DeHart’s Rentals, Chop Shop, Outcasts and Clabber Girl. A strong Old Town Tavern squad from Vincennes also is expected to play.
This may be one of the few opportunities to see a strong tourney field in Terre Haute. Games are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Swingers from Greencastle double-dipped Carlisle Plaza 10-7 and 8-6 to win the ASA coed novice state title in Lafayette last weekend.

Somebody forgot to tell the Tykal’s American team that they weren’t the favorite in the Brent D. Long Tournament last weekend at Spencer Field.

Following last week’s news that local softball fortunes had improved with Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair’s seventh-place finish in the Amateur Softball Association men’s Class D state finals, this weekend’s news is even better.

News from the state softball front has improved as a result of Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair’s seventh-place finish in the ASA MSP Class “D” state tournament this past weekend. With their finish, this is the first local team with a .500-or-better record in state tournament play.

Results from various ASA state tournament play continue to trickle in and unfortunately for local softball interests, they are disappointing. The combined record for the Outkast men’s team and the Ladies Last Call women’s team was one win and four defeats.

Valley softball teams fail to impress in ASA tourneys
“Disappointing” might be the operative word to describe the outcome for Wabash Valley softball efforts in the ASA men’s slowpitch Class D (North) and men’s slowpitch Class E (North) state tournaments last weekend.

Results are in for the Show-Me’s coed city softball tournament and Copeland’s are the new champions.
The eight-team affair was divided into two four-team pools, with the pool winners matched in the championship game. -
SOFTBALL SCENE: Valley squad wins Bedford tourney, series titles
This past weekend the Crawlworks/All American Auto Repairs squad ventured to Bedford to participate in another leg of the Tanel 360/Dudley Challenge Series. In doing so, Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair not only captured the tourney title but also annexed the season-long series title.

SOFTBALL SCENE: The talent ladder for local softball
I would like to open this week’s column with a “thank you” to Tribune-Star sportswriter David Hughes for his excellent article featuring local softball star Kevin Kull, which ran in Wednesday’s paper.
The article, which chronicled Kull’s rapid rise to prominence, was a much-discussed topic around the ballpark Wednesday and Thursday evenings. In addition, it provided me with an idea for this week’s installment of “Softball Scene.” -

This past Jan. 10, local softball icon Wayne Myers passed away leaving behind two brothers, Fred and Bill, son Terry, daughter Elaine as well as grandchildren Haley, Whitey and “Chicky.” In addition, the Indiana Amateur Softball Association was left without its commander in chief.

Local softball player and enthusiast Ryan Dehart recently made an astute observation when commenting on the Outkast softball squad. He said, “they’re getting hot at the right time of the year.” Lending support to Dehart’s claim was Outkast’s showing in the recent Hooter’s Invitational hosted by Indy Sports Park.

- Softball Scene: Several Wabash Valley softball teams preparing for state-tournament action The next three weekends should prove interesting for local softball squads as several local teams will be competing for state titles. Hoping to improve on last year’s second-place finish in the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) women’s class C tournament, the Chop Shop women’s team will be traveling to Kokomo this weekend. Chop Shop’s second-place finish at state earned it a nationals’ berth, and the squad finished fourth.
