Softball Scene: DeHart’s Rentals squad making some noise in men’s slow pitch

TERRE HAUTE — The right to lay claim to the vacant title of area’s best men’s slow pitch team is still a topic of debate. No claimant has been able to make a definitive argument that the title should belong to them.

Once local squad — DeHart’s Rentals — is making some serious noise that they are in fact deserving of the honors. Playing almost every weekend starting in mid-spring, the DeHart’s Rental squad has fared well thus far in 2007.

DeHart’s Rentals has been especially successful when competing at the Indianapolis Midwest Softball Complex. To date, while playing at Midwest, they have competed in five NSA tournaments and finished no lower than fourth.

DeHart’s Rentals also traveled to Owensboro, Ky., Columbus and Crawfordsville for tourney action.

While playing in the Owensboro NSA Invitational, they notched a 14-12 win over the local Clabber Girl team.

The next two weekends will see DeHart’s Rental competing for berths in both state and national tourney play. This weekend they will travel to Avon to compete for an ASA state tourney berth, while next weekend they will return to the familiar Midwest Softball Complex seeking a NSA World Series berth.

With echoes of Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” playing in the background, the old Ballyhoo Tavern team has reappeared to deny past claims of its demise.

The 2005 and 2006 0-2 finishes in the ASA MSP Class B state finals was too negative a finish for this one-time local powerhouse.

Under the guidance of Travis Mason and long-time manager Kenny Myers, the Ballyhoo Tavern team has put together a squad to compete in the 2007 ASAMSP Class C state finals.

With a little luck and a couple of tubes of Ben-Gay, the Ballyhoo Tavern team is certainly capable of making some serious noise in the state finals tourney.

Slated to play for Ballyhoo are: Mason, Bryan Millington, Vance Edmundson, Cyle Watts, Chris Patterson, Josh Hall, Jeff Lauritzen, Jason Thomas, Bryan Egli, Bryan Engelbrecht, Paul Rupska and Steve Elmlinger.

The team will be managed by Myers.

Any men’s teams wishing to play before their respective state tournaments are encouraged to sign-up for the July 21-22 tournament scheduled at Spencer Field. Local teams expected to compete are DeHart’s Rental, Ballyhoo Tavern, Chop Shop, The Law Office Of Charles Hear, Maurizio’s Pizza, Crawl Works and Clabber Girl.

The tourney is expected to help determine which local squad is the area’s best.

Interested teams can contact tourney organizer Chris Patterson at 236-7475.

A reminder to teams planning to participate in 2007 ASA state tourney play. Get your rosters from your respective ASA commissioner and make sure they are signed by the appropriate officials.

See ya at the park.
