Softball Scene: Softball leagues already under way and showing growth

As you might expect, another softball season is in full swing and the “Softball Scene” is back yet again.

With that, I will make my familiar appeal to interested parties to make softball-related information available for inclusion in this column.

Locally, the usual suspects are providing adult slowpitch league news.

Terre Haute Park and Recreation Department games are being played at Terre Haute’s premier softball facility — Spencer Field. With 24 teams participating, games are scheduled on Monday through Wednesday from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday nights involve coed teams, while Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are for men’s leagues.

The Terre Haute Church League has experienced a growth in team participation this season. As Terre Haute’s longest-running organized league, the Terre Haute Church League continues to serve the local church teams well.

Games are played at the Northside Community United Methodist facility at 1075 N. Fruitridge Ave. League action is scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings.

Another Terre Haute softball program experiencing growth is the Family Y. The program now includes 18 coed teams and nine men’s teams. Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for coed and Sunday evenings for men.

Plans are already in place for a late summer league at the Family Y facility. Interested teams may contact the Y at (812) 232-3358, Ext. 15.

Not to be excluded is the Brazil YMCA’s program. With more than 30 teams participating this summer, the Brazil leagues include men’s, coed and church coed teams. As with the Terre Haute Y program, a fall program is in the planning stage at Brazil. For more information, call (812) 442-6761.

Local softball aficionados have noticed the changing scenery at the old Glenn Civic Center softball fields. The property has changed hands, the infields have been worked up, the grass is being cut and things are looking much improved.

Having spent 20 years working on that particular facility, I’m especially interested in the fate of the long-unused softball venue.

As soon as I can find out what’s going to happen and if there’s still some life in the old ballfields, I’ll let you know.

The local slowpitch deck has been reshuffled with the demise of long-standing powerhouse Ballyhoo Tavern and the EZ Street Auto team (formerly Century 21). A number of local teams can be found with a sprinkling of players from both of the previously mentioned teams on their rosters. The net result is the local pecking order has yet to be determined.

Teams vying for the local top spot include Chop Shop, DeHart Rentals, Maurizio’s Pizza and Clabber Girl. Also worthy of mention would be the Tabco and Law Office of Charles Hear teams.

Without a doubt, this particular subject will be debated throughout the summer months. Those debates will be followed closely in this column.
