TERRE HAUTE — A myriad of injuries have plagued the St. Mary-of-the-Woods women’s basketball team in recent seasons, forcing the Pomeroys to compete on numerous occasions with just seven, six and sometimes only five players able to play.
With 11 players on this season’s roster, SMWC coach Deanna Bradley is cautiously optimistic that those days are thing of the past. Still, the injury bug has not quite been eradicated from this year’s team.
“This has been a season like many others … we’re battling injuries,” Bradley said last week. “We have 10 players able to play, although four of them are only back at about 60 percent. At least they haven’t been season-ending injuries. If we can get healthier and stay that way, we’ll be OK.”
Current players battling injuries include freshman Lauren Miller (missed three games after her foot was stepped on), freshman Whitney Allen (missed two games with an ankle injury), junior Abby McKee (missed time due to knee surgery) and junior Brooke Brown (playing, but her shoulder could dislocate at any time).

A fifth player, junior Lexee Hayes, was finally cleared to practice last week. The former Northview standout has missed about a season and a half due to ankle and knee problems, involving grafts for both injuries.
“We’re hoping to get Lexee back by the end of the month … or it might be until sometime in January,” Bradley said.
SMWC is off to a 2-5 start this season. After a season-opening win at World Harvest Bible College in Columbus, Ohio, they split a pair of games in the Judson College Tournament in Elgin, Ill.
The Pomeroys were ignominiously thumped in games vs. Taylor and the host team in the Grace Tournament before Thanksgiving. Then after a 20-day layoff, they dropped a pair of games to Madonna and the host team in the St. Ambrose Tournament last weekend.
“We won two of three games to start this season,” Bradley noted. “Then we were thumped by Taylor and thumped by Aquinas, the No. 25-ranked team in NAIA.
“This is a talented, but young group. They work hard and have great attitudes. But we need to be better defensively. We scored 81 points vs. Grace but lost by 20 points.”
This year’s top three scorers are all underclassmen, including a pair of freshmen. Brittney Shaner, a freshman from Center Grove, has been an impact player and leads the team with a 20 points per game average.
“Anytime you can get a kid from the [Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference], that’s a great thing for a school our size,” Bradley said, who mentioned she already has a verbal commitment for next season from another MIC player, this one from Warren Central.
Sophomore Chelsey Barron and the aforementioned freshman Allen average 14 and 12 ppg respectively.
If you noticed a trend in SMWC’s season chronology, the word “home” was not mentioned, because the Pomeroys have just six homes game scheduled this season.
The Pomeroys first home game is 7 p.m. on Thursday vs. Spalding University at their off-campus “home” the past few seasons, the Old Clinton Gym.
“This is one of those years,” Bradley explained the paucity of home games. “We lost a home game with Taylor-Fort Wayne when they closed the school. Another team owed us a game because they have no team this year.”
Always a big date on the SMWC schedule is their annual rivalry game vs. Rose-Hulman, set for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Hulbert Arena.
SMWC dominated the series in the early seasons, then the pendulum swung the other way; Rose has won by double-digit margins the last five years.
“It would be nice if both teams were healthy and able to play their best … and I think [Rose coach Prevo] Jon would agree,” Bradley added. “It should be a fun game this year. I hope we’re getting to a point where it’s a true rivalry game, where no one can predict the outcome.”

Secret weapon: Kelsey Rosselli finishing Woods career with a bang
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012. -
