SMWC topples Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE — After a sluggish first half for both teams, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College found enough offensive rhythm in the final 20 minutes to outlast host Rose-Hulman 51-41 in the 19th annual Clabber Girl Trophy women’s basketball showdown Tuesday night inside Hulbert Arena.

Chelsey Barron paced the victorious Pomeroys with 14 points, while Lyndsi Woolems contributed 12 points and usual leading scorer Brittany Shaner (who entered with a 29.3-points-per-game average) added 11 points.

For Rose, senior forward Alisa Dickerson ripped the nets for 23 points, including 21 in the second half, and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Neither squad shot the ball particularly well from the field — The Woods 17 of 50 (34 percent) and Rose-Hulman 13 of 46 (28.3 percent). The Engineers also committed 23 turnovers.

“I guess it’s what coaches call an ugly win,“ assessed The Woods’ Deanna Bradley, who has been the team’s coach for 17 of those 19 Clabber Girl clashes over the years.

“You’ll take it, but it was an ugly one… The first half was ugly. Nobody could find the basket. But in the second half, thankfully, we found it a few more times than they did.”

In the first half, neither squad could reach double figures until the 7:02 mark when Shaner, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, drove through traffic for a bucket to give the Pomeroys an 11-7 advantage.

A 3-pointer by Barron with 2:05 left in the half boosted their margin to 17-12 before Rose’s Chris Rollins connected on two free throws to make the halftime score 17-14.

The home team tied the score at 19-19 on a fielder off a nice spin move inside and a free throw by Dickerson with 16:31 remaining in the contest.

With 10:55 showing on the scoreboard, the Engineers seized their first lead of the night at 25-24 when Dickerson sank a pair of free throws.

The Woods outscored them 17-4 over the next 7 1/2 minutes, however, to catapult on top 41-29. Rose-Hulman regrouped to pull as close as 45-40 on a trey by Dickerson with 1:26 to go, but several missed free throws down the stretch thwarted the Engineers’ comeback hopes.

As usual, both colleges brought enthusiastic fans for this annual matchup. One sign from the Rose student section read: “THIS ISN’T YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS IT’S OUR HOUSE.”

Meanwhile, eight female Woods students sat behind the scorers’ table with P-O-M-E-R-O-Y-S painted on their stomachs.

The Woods owns a 14-5 lead in the all-time series.
