Woods, Rose softball teams split doubleheader

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College split a softball doubleheader that featured the longest athletic contest in history between the two schools on Friday night.

The Engineers and Pomeroys battled for two hours, 37 minutes in the opener before Rose captured a 5-4 victory in 10 innings. The Woods earned a split of the twinbill with a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

Rose won a marathon opener that marked the second longest softball game in school history. The Engineers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and second innings, before St. Mary-of-the-Woods tied the score with four runs in the fourth frame.

Pitchers Jordan Goslee of Rose and Sara Goelz from SMWC then became the story, holding the opposition scoreless from the fifth through ninth innings. Goslee added a scoreless 10th frame to set the stage for Rose’s winning rally in the bottom half.

Freshman Brianne Widmoyer opened the rally with a one-out double to right field, before junior Allison Faber reached base on a fielding error that moved Widmoyer to third. With two outs, sophomore Meghan Canary smashed a single down to the left field line to score Widmoyer with the game winning tally.

Canary and senior Brittany Bernthold led the Rose offense with two singles, one run and one RBI each. St. Mary-of-the-Woods had 15 hits in the contest, led by Chelsee Gerber with three singles. Goelz, Libby Wright, Chelsea Baker and Katelyn Tillotson contributed two hits for the Pomeroys.

Goslee earned the victory with 13 strikeouts and no walks allowed in a complete game effort in the circle. Goelz tossed 9 2/3 innings and scattered eight hits with five strikeouts for the Pomeroys.

In the nightcap, St. Mary-of-the-Woods rallied from a 2-1 deficit with six runs in the sixth inning to capture a 7-2 victory. Matthews led the offense with three hits, including a home run, and Melinda Bauer had two hits with a key double to spark the rally.

The offense made a winner of Jennie Faker in the pitching circle. Faker scattered 10 hits and held the Engineers to two runs in the victory. Kayla Yano had three hits to lead the Rose offense, while Bernthold and Kristin Greer contributed two hits each.

Rose-Hulman stands 7-7 overall, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods has a 14-11 mark on the season. The Engineers return to action on Monday against Anderson University in a home matchup.
