MATTOON, ILL. — St. Mary-of-the-Woods won its two pool games, thumping Penn State-Beaver 11-1 and Briarcliffe 18-1 in a pair of five-inning affairs to open play in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association national softball tournament Friday at the Roundhouse Complex.
The Woods (22-13) will enter bracket play today at 11 a.m. against Judson (Ala.), then would play an undetermined opponent at 3 p.m. The championship game is slated for 7 p.m.
In the opener, junior Ashley Loomis improved to 11-1, tossing a four-hitter. She was also 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Erica Ketner was 2 for 3 with two doubles, while Allison Tomey was 2 for 3 with four RBIs.
In the nighcap, the Woods spotted Briarcliffe a 1-0 in the first inning, then exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the second.
Loomis hit a pair of home runs, giving her 11 on the season, with four RBIs, while Amanda Daniel hit her fifth home run and had three RBIs. Tomey was 2 for 3 with a double.

Secret weapon: Kelsey Rosselli finishing Woods career with a bang
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012. -
