TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State announced Friday that five former athletes will be inducted into the ISU Athletic Hall of Fame in February.

The 16th class of the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame will include George Chestnut, Brian Dorsett, Chris Hicks, Julie Koebcke and John Sherman Williams.

Chestnut was a football, basketball and baseball standout from 1932-33; Dorsett a catcher for the ISU baseball team who played in the major leagues; Hicks an All-American offensive lineman for the football team in 1975; Koebcke a 3-time All-American in discus; and Williams played basketball for ISU from 1983-86 and is the Sycamores’ second all-time leading scorer.

The induction ceremony will be held on at 11 a.m. Feb. 16 prior to the Indiana State-Illinois State basketball game at Hulman Center.

Soccer

• Pugh named All-American — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods player Erin Pugh was named a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association first-team All-American.

The Terre Haute North graduate compiled 13 goals this season for the Pomeroys in 13 matches.

Coach Mike Aycock said Pugh’s season is second only to South Vermillion graduate Sarah Guinn’s school record of 16 goals set in 2005.

In addition to Pugh’s honor, three SMWC soccer players, Amanda Clemons, Jana Orman and Lauren Sullivan, were named to the USCAA National All-Academic Team. Orman and Sullivan are also Terre Haute natives.

• ISU players earn awards — At Evansville, Alyssa Ramsey and Sarah Whiteley were named second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference at a banquet Thursday prior to the MVC Tournament, which the Sycamores did not qualify for.

Ramsey, a key defender and an ISU junior, was honorable mention and made the all-freshman team two seasons ago.

Whiteley was ISU’s leader this fall with 14 points on seven goals in her senior season, including two-game winning shots.

Senior Lauren Podolski was tabbed an honorable mention selection, even though she missed four games due to a nagging hamstring injury. Podolski, who had three goals and three assists this season, was a first-team All-MVC performer the previous three seasons.

Ellen Gittemeier was named to the MVC All-Freshman squad. Gittemeier saw action in all but one match for the Sycamores, registering two goals and taking 15 shots.

“Last year was the first year we did not have a freshman recognized as part of this team and Ellen is well deserved of getting ISU back onto the All-Freshmen Team and we look forward to many more years of postseason accolades for her,” coach Vernon Croft said.

• Rose men get conference awards — Rose-Hulman claimed or shared all three major awards and placed seven players on the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team.

Senior Matt Trowbridge, who has scored 21 goals to rank 11th in the nation, earned co-Most Valuable Player honors in the HCAC this season, sharing the honor with Matt Vogel of Transylvania. Corbin Clow earned the league’s Freshman of the Year honor. Brad Hauter shared league Coach of the Year honors with Brandon Bowman of Transylvania and David Good of Manchester.

In addition to Clow and Trowbridge, three Engineers earned first-team All-HCAC recognition. Senior Trey Buck, junior Trevor Miller and senior Keegan Gumbs each earned the honor.

Second-team award winners from the HCAC included sophomore Nate Becker and junior Brian Fulmer.

Tennis

• Two Engineers Earn Regional Rankings from ITA — Rose-Hulman has placed two players in the regional rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Sophomore Sam Danesis stands No. 10 in singles in the Central Region and has teamed with freshman Megan Chann for a No. 9 ranking in doubles play.

Rose-Hulman finished the fall season with a 7-4 record and captured third place in the HCAC. The Engineers have recorded two consecutive winning seasons.

Volleyball

• ISU falls — At Normal, Ill., Indiana State remained winless in Missouri Valley Conference action Thursday. Illinois State (17-10, 9-7 MVC) defeated the Sycamores (3-21, 0-16 MVC) by scores of 30-23, 30-10, 30-18.

Basketball

• Woods player honored — The United States Collegiate Athletic Association has named Abby McKee as the women’s player of the week. McKee is a freshman forward for the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

The Plainfield native scored 33 points and pulled down 22 rebounds in two games at the Cornerstone Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich., last weekend. She was also named to the All-Tournament team.

“I feel honored and excited for being chosen as player of the week,” McKee said. “We may not have come home with two wins from the weekend, but Saturday we played 30 minutes of good basketball. We just have to keep improving and get all of our players healthy.”

• Daugherty gets 21 — At Vincennes, Terre Haute South graduate Brooke Daugherty tallied 21 points for Danville Area Community College in a recent overtime loss to Vincennes.

The Jaguars (1-2) lost 106-100 to the Trailblazers. Danville plays next Nov. 16-17 in the Lake Land Classic.

Softball

• MSA Tournament — Local teams had a strong showing last weekend in the Gravy Boat Open tournament at the Miss Softball America complex in Terre Haute.

The Outkast 18-and-under team took first place as did the Diamond Edge 14-and-under squad. The Outkast 16-and-under squad and the Diamond Terror was third.

A total of 21 teams from the Midwest participated in the two age divisions.

Sidelines: Pizza Hut Classic is basketball on caffeine
I’m no coffee connoisseur. If it’s hot and black and in a Styrofoam cup, I’ll drink it.
Knowing I consume a good bit of brew every day, my family helps fuel the addiction by buying Christmas gift cards for me at a local coffee shop, but, since I make it into town only occasionally, the cards stay stashed in my wallet until the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic rolls around.

Sidelines: When it comes to the Classic, it’s better late than never… I’m normally pretty punctual. Despite having to slip into the back pew at church on the occasionally tardy Sunday morning, I’m not in the habit of paying late fees on bills, standing at the back of any buffet lines, or being the last guy in the neighborhood to mow grass. As a matter of fact, I’m often the first employee to pull into the parking lot every morning.

Colts notebook: Team won't be very active in free-agent market Now that Indianapolis has re-signed unrestricted free agents Bob Sanders (strong safety), Dallas Clark (tight end) and Ryan Lilja (offensive guard), team officials are planning to sit back and see what’s going to happen with the rest of the team’s free agents.

Sidelines: A man has to do what a man has to do I have a job to do just after Christmas, and believe me, it’s a tough one; it takes four days, involves putting in long hours, requires both physical and mental sacrifice, and perhaps even holds the chance for long-term injury. But a guy has to do what he has to do to bring home a paycheck.

Sidelines: Illinois has its share of unique nicknames too Over the years, I’ve written at least four columns about unique school nicknames, but Casey resident Jim Blome reminded me in a letter about a year ago that I’ve never done a story about interesting names from Illinois schools. I think it’s time I remedied that error.

Warm up for Classic with Clyde Quiz An obligation at work kept me from being at the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic luncheon and tournament drawing at Terre Haute South a few weeks ago, but I don’t intend to let much get in my way when it comes to showing up for the lion’s share of the 28 games in the Classic, which, by the way, gets started today.

Mike Lunsford: It’s not how much we’ve gained, but how much we’ve lost I haven’t seen much basketball this fall; the weather outside has been too nice lately to turn my attention to things indoors just yet. So this is the first Sidelines of the year; I was already writing about hoops in October last season. I hope the old adage of it being better late than never still rings true.

Sidelines: Mail waste of time for some, but not for me No matter how many bills or how much junk mail I get, I’m one of those folks who anticipates going to the mailbox like Carter opening Tut’s tomb. I’ve always enjoyed getting mail; there’s a feeling of connectedness one gets when he sees his name on a letter from somewhere in the outside world. It makes little difference that what I most often get isn’t worth the postage it took to send it, even at the bulk rate.

Sidelines: It doesn’t take much for me to name names It’s no secret that I enjoy talking about old high school nicknames; I’ve done several columns on the subject before. I usually wait a little while before I write about a topic for a second (or third) time, but when Fred Myers of Riley dropped a letter to me a few weeks ago pointing out a potential mistake I made about a nickname, I just couldn’t resist going into it again. After all, it has been a couple of years.
