South students participate in honor bands

TERRE HAUTE — Several members of the Terre Haute South Vigo High School Band were recently honored to be members of two prestigious groups, both hosted by the Indiana Bandmasters Association.

The IBA All-Region Honor Band is open to band students in grades 7-9 and is hosted at several sites based upon regions in Indiana. Students from South typically are chosen for the Central Southwest Region of IBA, which was hosted by Cloverdale High School on the weekend of Nov. 17. Representing Terre Haute South were: Whitney Slaton on flute, Courtney Lane on oboe, Alexandria Truby and Cailin Harrell on clarinets, Aaron Warren and Jocelyn Brink on bass clarinets, Elora Harden on alto saxophone, Kristina Abrams on trumpet, Landen Turner on trombone and Jeremy Veth on tuba.

The IBA All-District Honor Band is open to band students in grades 9-12 and is hosted at several sites based upon regions in Indiana. Students from South are also typically chosen for the Central Southwest Region of IBA, which was hosted by Northview High School in Brazil on Nov. 10. Representing South were: Marissa Churchill on bass clarinet, Miranda Camp on alto saxophone, Maddie Pritchett on trombone, Jessica Turner on baritone and Bryce Weeks on tuba.

Students were nominated by their band director, Tim Murphy, and then selected from several hundred applicants for each of these two prestigious events. In both groups, students rehearsed several hours on Saturday and then performed for the public on a Sunday afternoon concert. Indiana Bandmasters brings in noted conductors and educators to lead these groups, and the All-Region band even premiered a new work entitled “A House Divided,” by Brian Balmages.
